  • Someone Help with my coolant light.

Heres the deal, Polo GTI 110km , 2 years old.

I get a red flashing temp light randomly. The book says its a Coolant Light.

I could drive for 2 hours before it comes on . Sometimes 10 minutes. Cars not over heating. Coolant is On max level. I have never changed or topped it up tho.

    What am i missing?

you could add 20ml of water to the fluid levels (when cold) to see if that stops it. When the car is running, the coolant reservoir level can drop.

Can't remember where I heard, but was told to use tap water, not distilled. Anyone confirm?

I think you want de-ironised water NOT tap water.

Think you will find normal water is ok, but different when it comes to your battery, anyway to the top if the level is good then good chance the light sensor in the coolant expansion bottle may be faulty. Unfortunately the whole bottle needs to be replaced, but i would check the temp switch on the radiator isnt leaking, very common, and might just be enough for it to drop slightly. Switch is on the left hand side of radiator. You can see it from the top and will be obvious if leaking.

Ill check to see if it leaks tomorrow.

I assume when you say the bottle, its the canister thats holding the coolant? So its probably not holding pressure so need to re replaced??

Any idea what its worth as a part to buy?

No mate as above, the place to check is radiator temp switch, if all ok and level is ok then itll be the sensor in the bottle, not it losing pressure

You need to get your thermostat checked

I've encountered this once, topping up tap water a little bit sort out this issue. Now however, I'm trying to sort another problem, water temp goes pass 1/2 mark (a bit) whenever I drive up enthusiastically on climbing up hillside areas. Main culprit I suspect is there's lack of breathing space between radiator and fmic. So I'm trying out Redline Water Wetter and 82deg thermostat (bought from ECS) hoping to reduce this issues, next is customized air duct from bumper to radiator.

I had my coolant light come on this morning (quite a cold morning for Melbourne in Summer).

It's happened before on cold mornings and all it takes is to turn the car off and start it again. Flashing light gone.

In regards to topping up the coolant bottle, it's a temporary fix as it will only serve to dillute the mixture with G-12.

I've got a bottle of de-mineralised water in my extinguisher holder for such occasions.

Mine will come on when it's parked on a hill, but like Bflat says - I just turn it off and on again.
