Well I'm not having any joy with my dealer. They showed me on their system that there are no recalls for my car, accept for a mirror cap thing that was tended to years ago (or maybe that was just a warranty claim). It may be though that the recall was not made here in NZ, although you would expect we would get the same ones as Australia. Mine's a late 06 GTI, which appears in their system as an 07. I got the impression from the dealer that such recalls tend to stay open indefinitely, if they exist.
Yeah, already advised them of that number. Will see if they have any news for me tomorrow when I go to pick up the replacement, but suspect I'll be handing over my hard earned cash for it.
Bringing this back again... PoloGIT, i was wondering if you had any luck having the coil/s replaced under warranty? Called up today and they said the car wasn't eligible, which is contrary to the previous posts in this thread ('06 GTI), but because it's been such a long time maybe the extended warranty has run out.
Does anyone have experience with purchasing 06A905115D coils in Sydney? My local dealer said they would need to order the part which wouldn't arrive until Tuesday or Wednesday, so if it's possible to get it sooner I will try that.
Nah, no joy for me. As above, the recall doesn't seem to have ever happened in NZ for some reason. Would be curious to know why yours isn't eligible though...could it be that it's already in the system as having had it done in the past maybe?
The replacement I got was the D model for ~NZ$80. I then replaced the last remaining A too, which they sold to me at trade for $65 - figured it was worth it for peace of mind.
Can't tell what type the 1st and 2nd coils are, but the 3rd and 4th are 06A905115C so no recall for me. The primary resistance of all four was almost identical (+- 0.25%), the secondary resistance in IC1 and IC4 were the same and IC2 AND IC3 were a little lower (- 6%). It looks like this is not coil pack related unless all four are misfiring . Going to test the diodes when my friend comes back this week with the equipment.
This became much longer than intended, sorry for that. I've had two problems with this car;
1) The turbo wasn't able to go above 5psi when accelerating and would drop straight back below 0 when it hit this point. This actually only started about 8-9 days before I had the 8yr/120000km service the friday before last (13/ 8 ). I honestly don't know what minor misfires feel like so this could have also been the start of my misfiring issue, but given that accelerating was fine so long as the turbo wasn't engaged, I assumed it was a turbo problem and took it easy the next week. Mentioned this at the service, later that day vw said one of the hoses had come loose so they re-attached it and it was now fine. I'm still not sure if that was strictly due to the hose dislodging, or if there were misfires that were infrequent enough to not turn on the exhaust gas warning lamp.
2) The power has randomly cut out and activated the power steering warning lamp 4 times in 9 months, twice sitting in idle at the lights and twice when reverse parking under heavy electrical load (lights, air con, aftermarket radio all on). These instances have been pretty evenly spread out. Some other people have posted similar problems on here and they all seemed to solve it by cleaning all of the earth connections. The odometer, car clock, aftermarket settings would all reset. Even when the engine has been fine, the automatic windows sometimes have to get adjusted the whole way up/down manually and the car will lock but the flashing red light on the driver door doesn't turn on and the remote key won't unlock it as a result. Definitely naive to let these infrequent experiences pass, they weren't bothersome enough for major concern and should have been addressed earlier.
I read this soon before booking the service and asked VW to diagnose anything else that may cause this before doing it myself. They reported that cylinder 4 was misfiring and recommended I have the coil pack replaced, which they would charge $215 in parts ($125) and labour ($90) for. Given that I had never felt any misfirings, fuel efficiency has always been good, and know that bad earths can cause this I drove it home friday afternoon intending to clean them all on sunday.
It was absolutely fine driving home after the service, no misfires and the turbo was working. Went to the shops that night, no problems at all. Get in saturday night, start it up and sit there for about 60 seconds while calling a friend, all good. Roll down the driveway and start accelerating onto the road, very quickly the exhaust management light came on and car started shaking. Drive it around the block straight back home because of this, hardly any power the whole time, the turbo could get to 1-2 psi but would shoot straight back down immediately. So 24 hours and 15kms after the 8yr/120000km service my car is now clearly misfiring and can't be driven.
I assumed it was a faulty ignition coil because that is what was recommended for repairs. I had never had a problem with them before the service (unless this is the cause of my power and/or turbo problems), and either by pure coincidence they are now faulty, or something else that has been changed is causing this, possibly even both. Given that the spark plugs were replaced (4 x part VW101000063AA), and they are the variable before and after the service that's where I'm looking next. Can new spark plugs not be compatible with older coils and ruin them? Just have to get the correct tool first to remove, check the gap distance and test for sparks. If the spark plugs are the cause of this problem and VW have just replaced them, does anyone have advice for me to prove this in order to get a refund from a bad service? If they are all fine though it's back to then coils to see resistance under a higher voltage - we didn't look at the wiring diagram and account for a capacitor and diode so the current readings could be off. Then it's mechanic time after this.
VW have been hardly any help either this whole time. Phoned multiple times last week to speak to the service rep that was aware of the pre-existing problems and was asked to send an email if I couldn't get through again. Sent an email tuesday night and he didn't respond at all, finally got on to him on friday and he was hardly co-operative or helpful. So if I can do this myself I will, it was a functioning car before the $820 service and 15 kms later it can't leave the driveway without causing further damage. It may not be their fault but because of the post-service experience another mechanic will see this car before they do.
This has gone a little off-topic now. Feel free to offer any advice/suggestions if I've overlooked something, or ask away if more information can be posted. Thanks.
If the recall is not on their system as having been done for your VIN, then it simply wasn't done. The burden of proof is on them not you, and the proof is they don't have you ticked off. I'd be saying to them I don't care if it was 10 years ago or whatever it was, you need to do my car under the recall and score a whole set of coils. My first car came up on the system when I called. Just call VW head office, give them your VIN and they'll tell you. I'd say the dealership just doesn't want you to do it. Get HQ to email it so you have something in writing and go and get your free coils.
I think there is a law in place that the car manufacturer has to keep the spare parts for your car only for 8 years (last time I’ve checked in 2005, not sure how long is it now) after the model production ended. So, don’t jump on the dealer the guns blazing yet, unless you know that by law they still have to keep the parts in stock.
Ha ha no of course don't go looking for a fight. I didnt mean guns blazing but for sure you can play it as though they should fix it and you may just get a win. But seriously for them to say they had no idea about the recall - look it up on your own system that's put in your hands for that very purpose rather than throwing it back at the user.
called up southernvw here in adel but they have no idea about the recall
I doubt anyone there worked on vws when this was live. Just buy 4 coilpacks off the internet and fix it yourself. Be a lot less effort than going through a dealer. Max cost $125
