Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Camber bolts

I have been searching on the forum and only sparse details on camber bolts is available. I am assuming that the 9N Polo GTis have neutral camber (not negative or positive).

In my previous car (my first car), a 1995 Hyundai Excel, I used cheap tyres that could be rotated (non-directional tread).

Given that our tyres on the Polo GTis are directional they cannot be rotated (except front to back and vice versa). And given the cost of each tyre (compared to my previous cheapos of $60/tyre for the Excel), I would want to have more play time (faster cornering) in the car without scrubbing the entire outside tread away and having good tread left in the inside edge. Front tyres wear faster so I can move rear tyres to the front on the same side of the car.

If I could get 1 degree negative camber (tops of tyre closer together), the car will steer much sharper and have more even tread wear across the surface of the tyre. This means better cornering grip (particularly when wet).

The easiest and cheapest option is to use camber bolts and it looks easy enough to do it myself.

Question, has anybody tried this out on their Polos yet?

Im 95% sure you cant do camber bolts on the polo, or everyone would have them by now.

The strut design does not allow them

there are cheap bolts that say they do it (ebay style), but I don't trust a little tab bit hanging off a screw to give me improved geometry.

If you drop it, the camber on the front improves.

I asked at my last wheel alignment and it's a no-go unfortunately.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Van use shims for his camber?

What was the reason given for it being not permissible, bflat?
Whiteline advertise camber bolts to suit the 9N3/MkIV Golf and I've seen them fitted to other cars. I thought they were entirely safe and legal if fitted to the upper arm.

Greg, no upper arm on the Pog.

I don't think camber bolts work on the Polo 9n3. Interesting to note that none of the VW models with similar front suspension had camber bolts listed as an option.

                          SIGH...

Redranger (who own both Whiteline and Nolathane) have moved the camber bolts to the Nolathane business arm for some reason - you will not find camber bolts for ANY car at the Whiteline site, anymore.

You can see the camber bolts to suit the 9N3 at Nolathane Suspension Bushings for VOLKSWAGEN Polo (9/03/2009)

                            No, they do not work

Trust me, I bought a set and they're still here in their packaging.

So how do you know that they don't work??
Or do you mean that they are back in their packaging?
