Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Reverse + Fan

    Hi Guys

Quick question. WHen i put the car in reverse i can hear a fan turn on and its coming from the passenger side.

I only heard it for the first time this week.

I have had the car now for 3 months.

Only mod is a BMC panel filter.

    Just curious

its normal. they all do it. beleive its to do with the change in airflow due to reversing but not 100% sure on its actual effect....

If it's like a Skoda, it is opening the recirc flap to reduce the amount of exhaust coming into the car. Should also happen when you use the windscreen washers

My Golf does this for the exact reasons you list so wouldn't be surprised if it's a standard VW thing. It outlines it in the manual, take a look and see if it's in yours.

It should also give you a courtesy wipe on the rear windscreen when the wipers are on.

Yep... so for those obviously too lazy to read the owners manual, you can confirm that this is the case by just sitting there in neutral and turning on recirc on the aircon. You'll hear the exact same fan noise
