Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Time for the 120,000km service...

    Gents,

So I've just rung up my local dealer to enquire about the 120,000km service.

I asked for a rough estimate and they said anywhere from $1200-2400 if needing a timing belt.

Now it is a work car but obviously would prefer to save some money so what can I expect to take it to a specialist? If so any recommendations? I'm in S.E suburbs Melbourne and Volkspower is really just a little too far.

    Cheers

Also I haven't replaced rotors yet just pads... is it about time I replace the rotors? They've got a fair lip on the front! If so what should I be replacing them with? looking for value for money of course... only got 12months left with the car!

You will need new discs then, since they're most likely under the MIN. TH. that is allowed. As for the timing belt shop around, but the timing belt kit itself is expensive and with the water pump and the coolant it can cost a bit, but far from $2400

I bought the cambelt kit (tensioner & rollers), as well as new thermostat and water pump myself, and will be getting my local agent to do the work at my upcoming 90k km service. Thankfully, I have very good ties with them and get a goo discount, so labour won't be ridiculous. And by buying the parts separately at the beginning of the year, means that it's split up and not one massive expense in one go.
