  • Another Sad Goodbye

Its a bittersweet moment.... with todays trip to my VW dealership I recieved the delivery date for my Golf GTI: 1st week of June. I was estatic, till I walked outside and saw my sad little Polo GTI sitting there....
I knew that it was going to be our last month together....

Its been a great 3 1/2 years, and its never skipped a beat. Its been great to drive in any situation and didnt disappoint once. Economical, as fast as you need really, efficient, well built and FUN. I know its not a Porsche or a Lamborghini, but I still sometimes look back after I park and think: You're the ****.

But all good things come to an end, and I will no doubt take my time in these weeks to reaquaint myself with all the reasons that make the little pocket rocket a great car.
....and also use it as a precursor to the next in line....

Goodbye Polo GTI, and I hope that you will find another appreciative owner as I was.

Last night I officially handed over and sold my dear modded pog gti to a friend and fellow vwwatercooled and vdubclub member. Sad to see it go but at least its going to a friend who I'm sure will take great care of it plus I still get to see it regularly. Kinda felt a bit teary as it was by far the car that I'd learnt most and had the most enjoyment in. It taught me the pleasures, fun and frustration of modifications, how to much fun you can have through tight hairpins and wet surfaces whilst doing it controllably and safely with the utmost feedback one could desire from a light compact pocket rocket. Its shown its presence at various vdub meets and put those who taunt and tease it for being a cute and girly's car in their place (wrx's and falcodores). One could say I'm attached to the dear thing but i'd prefer to diagnose myself with seperation anxiety where every time I see the thing drive ever so far away from me, I make a faint whimper like a sad little puppy scratching the door saying please come back. Its replacement is by far no beast and will never match the dynamics that the pog and is more a competent family cruiser than anything else but at least its a good compromise considering the wife had most of the say this time around. Bye Bye dear little friend. You've definately shown me how to have a good time and coming back wanting for more. I just hope you'll be continue to put the same smile onto the face of the new owner as you have with mine. I'll always remember the joys we've had together and will remember the best of times. *sniff* *sniff*...think I'm gonna have a good cry now...

I too sold my 2002 polo yesterday. I've kept it in top condition and it still looks great. Sad to see it go and I know the new owner won't look after her as well.

I tend to think the same way.
I can't imagine finding a suitable replacement, nor am I inclined to want to even look.

          The car has spirit.

For the money, I can't think of another car as quick, comfortable, refined and as fun as my Polo.

I said goodbye to my old Celica GT-Four Group A Rallye this morning
I've owned it for around 7 years, and went through a lot with that car! Unfortunately it has sat for 18 months without moving at all, so I was not as sad to see it go. Still, a lot of memories of awesome fun times and plenty of headf*cks along the way!!

I have a real soft spot for the GT-Four, especially the GrpA.... Have heard they are a basket case to keep running though

I remember when I was an apprentice mechanic at Toyota, I wanted one of those. Sounded great and drove like a badass. Would've bought one and taken it down reefton if I had one and knew about the roads back then. Oh well, still rates highly on my list but both the car and myself are getting too old to get acquainted nowadays.

Yeah they are a beautiful car in terms of their looks and heritage, but as Dave mentioned they are getting very long in the tooth now. Mine was at the age that almost everything was coming up for replacement, so the buyer bought it basically as a project.
Handling wise it was pretty good after a couple of minor suspension mods, and it had so much grip that you could be silly with it and not get into trouble. Not very fast in stock form though, the 3SGTE needs a bit of help to get 1500kg of Toyota build quality moving

They are a bit of a basket case to keep on the road, mine was a daily for 5 years and the first couple of years it was almost off the road as much as on . The engine bays are very very tightly packed and as such heat takes its toll on sensors, wires, hoses etc. That said, after the first couple of years it was pretty reliable!

I'm toying with the idea of selling, but it fills a very good role between comfort and fun. Fun factor I'd go back to subaru, but it just wasn't as comfortable to run around in. I'd like a little more spirit, which is why I'm looking at tuning... I really only fell in love with the subaru after some mods (bigger turbo, ECU, exhaust, suspension). Seems like I'm going down that path with the polo (excl turbo).
