  • Dirty scratched rim

    I didn't even do it!

I did put a slight scrape into mine, which i was kicking myself for... but it was just on the face, and really could be polished out it was just skin deep. But i knew it was there, so thought i would have it fixed up... only be $30 or so. So i figured i'd put on the spare and give it to a tyre shop for a few days... when i got out the spare it was REALLY scratched. Big chucks of alloy missing etc, big scratches everywhere... disaster rim. It houses some cheap brand new tyre, so i'm guessing he destroyed the first tyre when he did it.

I should remind everyone that i got the car 2nd hand (15,000km) so its ok the factory isn't sending out battered rims. Anyway... now i'm not 100% sure how this will come up if fixed (if it can be)... and wondering how much a new one costs... or if its even worth fixing, and just leave in the boot forever.

Could you live with the knowledge its there? The first time i do need the spare i'll be putting this ugly monstrosity on my precious car...

Would you get it replaced? Fixed? Left as is?

    not woth fixing tooooooooooo pricey
i just repaired my wheel, $250 and was a real minor scratch.
although it depends on the finish of the wheel, mine was like a polished alloy so they had to re coat the whole rim.

I've got minor gutter rash on my left rear wheel. It's not something I worry unduly about - it shaves off some precious unsprung mass

More seriously, these things happen to wheels. Obviously if it's *really* scratched up like the one you found in the spare wheel well (as you described) it isn't nice, but minor gutter rash WILL happen over time. Nobody can say, truthfully, that they haven't botched a parallel park, especially with the old-style sandstone curbs you find around Sydney.

I had rims done for $100 each - Western Body Works near Sinnamon Park. Came back good as new.

              Dirty scratched rim

Something to consider, you can actually paint the GTI Polo rims a dark charcoal colour for next to nothing.

All you have to do is buy $5 worth of fuel (premium of course) take your car for a drive and gently apply the brakes a couple times, rotate your wheels then repeat step two.

The Eagle F1s do supposedly have flange protectors. I'm looking forward to seeing how well they'll work. My current alloys got plenty of scratches already. :*(

I put the spare in for fixing, quoted $80. I don't think it will look like new, but alot better. Didn't get pic of it before, but i'll put up after pic
