  • Gti issues???

G,day guys as you can tell this is my first post.

Brought the polo about a year back now and been loving it. Its a 2006 model 1.8t. Just in the last few days however been hearing a high pitched whining noise on start up only lasts for about a minute then dissappears. Dont think its anything to be too concerned with as it sounds like some sort of electric motor and has no other effect on the car.
Just wondering if any of you have heard of or had a similar issue to this or what it could be?

    Thanks for your help.

Hey, not sure if I'd describe it as a whine but mine makes a high pitched humming as soon as I open the door for the first time. Someone explained what it was in another thread so I assumed it was okay. You'll also hear noises when u turn off the car which I think is about it cooling. However it's very inconsistent

I may however just be talking about a different unrelated noise to ur problem xD

Isnt the fuel pump priming its self is it?

I hear a high pitched wining noise in my car from the rear right wheel at low speeds when turning, stuffed if i know where exactly, gotta bring it back to the dealer for the same issue again.

Does it sound like a belt slipping noise??

The noise you are talking about when you open your car is the fuel pump priming the fuel system, and the sound you hear when you switch off, especially after hard driving or hot days is your auxiliary coolant and oil pumps pumping coolant and oil to your turbo to cool it down and lubricate it...

Do you hear a relay click when it stops and spins down? It's probably the secondary air pump, aka smog pump, auxiliary air pump. Pumps air into the exhaust manifold on cold start to get the catalytic convertor working more quickly. Mine is noisy as all buggery. They're $800 from VW, but I've seen some for ~$150-200 on ebay (though still have to check it would fit the polo). A number of people here have disconnected and removed them, plugged the hole (you can buy a blank for $15 or so) and put a resistor across the terminals to trick the ecu into thinking its still there.

another noise you hear when you unlock the car and open the door and stick the key in the ignition, is the little flap that opens/closes the cabin to allow air in from outside. I think its called the air-recirculation flap. It always opens when you turn on the ignition. the same flap closes automatically when you put the car in reverse. its the one you can control by pressing the little button on the dash that looks like a arrow pointing in a circle.

hubbo_8, have you been able to find a solution to this?

I too have just noticed a similar noise after I start the car when cold, but it goes away when the car's idle drops back to normal.

Blitzen, for me, the noise does not sound like belts slipping, but actually like an electric motor that is worn out.

Sounds like SAI system, designed to get the car up to operating temps quicker, heats the CAT quicker to reduce emissions. Idle is higher and more vibration.

Can't comment on if yours is having issues, but you will likely throws code if there are issues with flow, etc.

Most definitely the Secondary air pump. Mine does the same thing and I have removed it and powered it up on the bench to verify that a) it still pumps air and b) it is the part making the noise!

Thanks for the responses. Seeing as though I need a service, I will get them to look into it.

Out of curiosity, where exactly is this air pump in the engine bay?
