  • Polo Gti recent high fuel consumption!!!

Hey guys, recently after the hot and humid weather and driving through some water furing the Melbourne floods, my lil pog seems to be become much thirstier than before. Haven't made any mods/changes to it or changed my driving style whatsoever. It used to hover around 7.8l/100km on the freeway and around 8.6l/100km in city traffic. Now its been averaging 10-13l/100km??? WTF? I've tried switching it to and from APR to factory and back to APR tunes and still does the same. Once some days, I might average 10l/100km and other maybe 14l/100km. So far, I've been getting approx 450km out of a tank whereas previously, I'd get 500-580 a tank. I've alternated between Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate to see if there's any noticeable change but so far not much luck in that department. Any clues what this may be due to guys?

How long since your last service?

Possibly the airflow exhaust/airflow sensors, mention it next time you take it in, or plug a vag-com cable in and see what comes up

I average between 400-440km consistently. I'd be cheering for anything above 500km!!

During that really hot week I only got 350km but I had the ac on the second I stepped into the car lol

Last service was at 60,000km sometime late last year so not more than 6 months since.

Has it always done that since you had it or did it suddenly increase in fuel consumption at some point? Mines always been able to do at least 490km (that's pushing it really hard too).

It's always been like that. Before and after giac.. The only time I get good consumption is when I drive down the south coast.

Otherwise I drive around the suburbs and drive to the city 3-4 times a week (70km round trip) in afternoon traffic. So what I get seems normal to me lol

With mine i get on average 550 a tank, that's with daily peak hr traffic, but never run it completely empty as i fill up on fridays since them sneaky fuel company b@stards changed the cheap day

when you top the tank up, and reset all clocks, whats the total distance achievable in the tank on the computer?

Its quite possible a sensor is playing up

Hmmnot exactly sure cause I've been filling it up when it reaches 1/3 tank left or when the computer says 100km ish remaining. Will have a go and fill her up and then see what I get again.

I have pretty much always got 350-400 km before the fuel light comes on

It definitely uses more fuel in QLD summer with the aircon cranked.

Funny, I was thinking exactly the same this week. Normally a trip home from work averages 8-9l/100km, the past week it has been 10-11. Don't know if it is related to the humidity, but I was wondering. Car is due for a service in a couple of weeks, so will be keeping an eye on it.

Of course if you have consumers like AC on you are putting more load on the engine, goes without saying. If its over the top consumption then have the live data read in cruise conditions, not stop start stuff, and watch the injector pulse width and lambda figures

Jeeeesus man haha! I get about 440-450km (55L tank) usually & that's with K04 and a round trip to work of about 11km per day (10 mins each way) which is hardly good for engine wear or consumption either! You must be sitting in neutral on the freeway for an hour or you have a REALLY heavy foot!!

What about recent hot weather we've all been going through and heat sink etc?

far out Chuck....300 to 360 per tank is not very good.
having said that, get caught in traffic on a 40 deg day with a/c on and it will drink plenty.
my little trip computer (2) is showing between 8.6L to 8.8L/100km. so on a 45L tank thats just a bees d*ck over 500km per tank.
