After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Brake wear

Hey folks, i have an 06 GTI, GIAC'd and nothing else..

Was wondering what the maximum wear is on the stock disks?

I measured the lip as being 1.3mm with my trusty verniers yday.. VW Chatswood says i need to replace em, is this true?

If the consensus is replace, should i go OEM, DBA, or larger?

If you do go bolt on larger, whats the impact on insurance, without it being engineered?

    Regards

    Ben

Yes, they need to be replaced.

I went RDA Slotted rotors + Remsa pads on mine and that seemed like a nice upgrade, without losing any of the cold stopping power of the OEM setup.

Id upgrade from OEM when the disks wear out, don't know if its just me but the stock brakes aren't the best

Agreed, I think they are ****e. Mine looked all scored and worn within 5000km, and I'm not a heavy braker at all.

Sometimes I almost **** myself when i hit them because they just don't feel like they'll stop you in time, yet amazingly they do.. they really do lack feel.

The brakes in a standard golf tdi even put them to shame

I went remsa pads and rda slotted discs. Nice upgrade from stock and won't affect insurance or require any engineering cert. Call Greg at GSLrallysport.

Better pads make a huge improvement to the feel.

I have brembo slotted rotors I bought off ECS (mk4 GTI) and EBC Greenstuff pads... Very happy with the combo.

I thought the stock brakes were very average, hence why i upgraded to my porsche set up. Massive, massive improvement and the car stops, very well might I add LOL

What km's off the brakes are people getting? I'm up to 97,000km on the original pads and discs and they are still good enough.

I'm currently on 84k km's. I'm suspecting I'm still on my original discs, but they need to be replaced now. Pads wise, I'm probably looking at getting between 30-40k km's off my Ferodo Platinum's. I don't drive spiritedly all the time, but the track use is where I tend to use them, LOL.

i got a 2006 model, had it since new.
i've only done 55,000kms and im still on original discs and pads. while rotating tyres on the weekend i checked and still got plenty of pad wear left and the discs have less than 1mm lip on the edge...so they are prob still ok for a few more kms.
