Tyre Changing toolkit

I went to check the tyre pressures in the spare at the servo today - in order to get to the tyre valve, you have to pop open this container holding the jack and other tyre changing equipment, and remove the jack, before unscrewing the bolt holding the container/tyre in place. Not the greatest design, but I can live with that.

So, after doing this and checking the pressure of the spare - I went to put everything back and found....I couldn't get the jack back in the container so that the lid shuts without needing to "force" it somewhat - it's now bulging out slightly.

Now, I'm not sure if they're always like that, or if I've screwed up somewhere (I can't possibly see how that jack could get any further in, though?) - but could someone take a look under their boot carpet and see if their container shuts nicely, or if it bulges?

It causes a very slight bulge in the actual carpet as a result - I'm not sure if that was always there any more!

I agree mate, What would be good if someone would kindly take a few photos of it the way it is originally so that its there for reference purposes. I had the same porblem when my bro put a rock through the side wall.

Oh man, me too! I spent a good hour trying to get it all back in neatly, just wouldn't happen!

Pics would be great of how it looks before anything is taken out for the first time.

oh my, this is hilarious... me #5 - I thought i was the only one that couldn't fit it in properly!

I'm going to ask VW when I go there for some warranty work.

Life is too short to spend the amount of time it seems to take to get the jack back in without 'the bulge'

I had this problem too, but figured out how to put it in without a bulge, not sure if its the way it came however.

the trick... from memory... is to flick the side of the jack... bottom of the first picture...

It kind of springs towards you abit, and drops down...

Its hardly the best description, and i couldn't tell you without going down and looking... but now you have a starting point you can figure it out.

I didn't have the problem... i'm like what the hell have i done... i swear it came out like this... but some part obviously sprung out a little... and has to be pushed back before it will seat itself.

edit: On the 2nd picture... the very bottom left, see that spring... i think the bit you have to move is attached to that...

Thanks to MR-GTI and MINTPolo, I no longer have the 'bulge'!

For the record, here's how it's done.

1) Optional - this is basically for spatial reference. Position the tyre changing toolkit so that, when the lid is closed, the triangular symbol points toward the cabin.

2) When you open the container - the curved part of the tyre iron should be closest to you. Remove the jack from the container.

3) Place the jack in the container, so the threaded side is facing up. The triangular spring loaded portion of the jack (on the underside, if the threaded part is facing up) should be closest to you.

4) The lid will not close at this stage. Without moving the jack at all, reach underneath it, and flip the spring loaded section downward. You will feel the jack slide down snugly in its new home.

5) Close the lid, replace the carpet and enjoy your 'bulge free' boot, the way that VW intended!
