  • Clio vs GTI

When i was looking to buy a car i had three cars in mind.

    *182 Cup Clio
    *GTI 180 pug
    *GTI Polo

The GTI 180 was instantly ruled out when i drove a GTI (non 180)
the interior was HORRID and felt very old.

I drove a 182 cup, it felt reasonably quick, fairly nimble but very poorly put together and didnt leave me with a real sense of quality.

The GTI just poured with class and quality. It was everything the others were not.

Thing is, when i was hunting for my new car i was a 2004 Fiesta owner on fordforums.com.au

A couple Fiesta owners bought 182 cups and i was blasted and made a fool of for not getting one. They then found every review which stated the 182 was the 'better' car and tried to humiliate me and make me think i had made the wrong choice.

Anyway, i just wanted to express my absolute joy of being involved in a forum like watercooled, where everyone can have their say and it remains friendly at all times.

Secondly, i know alot of you go to the track, i was just wondering if you ever come accross any 182 Clio's and 180 GTI pugs.

How does the GTI fare against them?

        Clio

The pug looks like it has gained alot of weight.

Kind of looks like a Nissan Tiida too lol.

I much prefered the shape of the previous GTI 180, but prefer the idea of the 1.6 turbocharged bmw/pug motor.

Walking over to our honda branch tommorow to have a closer look at the Civic type R looks pretty extreme. Not sure about the red carpet !

I think the 206 GTi 180 looks the business, personally - albeit quite expensive when you look at the XR4, Polo GTI and Ralliart Colt these days.

Apparently, it was a brilliant handling car, and the 180bhp engine pulled it's weight too - Peugeot have always made some great handling cars, with the 205GTi coming to mind instantly.

People slate the French for their build quality, but the GTi 180 I sat in felt screwed together pretty well, although the interior materials didn't really appeal as much as the VW's. I think the 180 had the edge as far as any of the current hot hatches are concerned as far as exterior styling is concerned (Mini excepted).

clio is faster cf to polo gti stock to stock. but just dun like the look. parts can be expansive
206 is well put together, but pricey.
colt handle well, but hate the look and cheap interior (except the recaro). swift sport looks & handle good, but bumpy ride, lack of torque, cheap interior.
xr4 handle well, but not much u can do with the power mod
i chose polo gti coz its overall package and good mod potential.
i guess every car is a good car as long as u like it

I agree the Clio looks the goods, but I've never seen one at the track. If I was French, and lived in France, I'd definitely have one (or the Pug). But here in Australia? Well, they say on a clear night, if you listen carefully, you can hear them depreciating

I've been toe to toe with a 206 GTI 180 quite a few times. Both cars stock, in a drag race it was pretty evenly matched, the car who launched better and did cleaner shifts seemed to edge in front only slightly.

Around the track i think the 206 is way more sorted for cornering, in the Polo it sometimes feels like you are gonna rub the paint off the door handles, the 180 seemed to be able to handle the corner a bit better, way less body roll. We were not timed at the track though so i can say for sure who was faster or not, but it was my impression that the 206 would be faster around.

The Clio is a faster car and more fun - But as people mentioned, put together horribly.

I always though renaults were well built until me and my dad went and test drive a clio sport a couple of months ago - Rode very well, handled great and had lots of power but the interior was just bad

If you're just after a quick car, get the clio
If you're after a package, get the polo

Amen to that! I recently went and looked at all 3 too. I decided to go second hand and get a GTI golf and spen the extra money on it to make a more unique car. I honestly believe the baby dub offers far more flexibility to further enhance your car too.
