  • New Windscreen

Some useful consumer advice to those currently looking at a new GTI, windscreen cover on your policy.

Was on OPH on Sunday and got a chip from my mates JCW, right in the bottom right corner. The crack keeps moving along Called O'Brien today $524 to replace. I rang NRMA to check if I had included windscreen cover, I don't Windscreen cover from NRMA was only bout $54 extra and for unlimited windscreens, so I have now added that I've never had to have a windscreen replaced before.

That's a bummer - i was unfortunate to cop a huge rock on my pogo screen 4 months after i got it.

I recommend getting the screen from VW - part no. VW-6Q0845011BE, then get a reputable windscreen professional to fit it. Screen costed me $284 back in '06 and the fitting was around $140.

Word of warning - the replacement process can be very messy and could leave you with heartache worst than the damage on the windscreen, if not done properly.

Anyone who is not experience with fitting screens to VWs may damage your interior trims and possibly scratching the paint work surrounding the screen. From experience, most fitters are rough and WILL cause some sort of damage while doing the job.

If you're getting a windscreen pro to fit the new screen at you home etc, I would recommend doing all the prep work yourself to eliminate the posibility of damage (but only if you're confident in tackling the job).

The process involves removing both the interior A-pillar trim (by carefully removing the "AIRBAG" plastic cover. Under there is a torx screw securing the top of the trim in place. The rest of the trim is held together by clip. Keep an eye on the wiring to the tweeters and the curtain airbag when unclipping) - on the outside, remove the wiper arms and the rubber plus the plastic cowling at the bottom of the screen.

Lastly - to protect your interor from glass shards and sealant, cover your whole dash (including the seats if you can) with something like a bed sheet and protect the surrounding paint work with masking tape.

          good advice there higuma..

damn, $284 for a genuine windscreen is cheap as chips - i'd definately head to that route if it happens to me!

a question; doesn't the polo have rain sensor wipers? do we need a specific windscreen for that application?

            Valuable advice

Thanks for the advice, higuma. That's the sort of thing that this forum should be all about.

My insurance also doesn't cover windscreen so I reckon $50 or so is money well spent. Thanks, floody

On modern cars the days of diy windsceen replacement appear to be over

No. It's not rain-sensitive (it's just that we haven't had any rain to speak of for a very long time).

Watch out with insurance companies and their 'windscreen cover' - It definently isn't worth it.

They have a clause that allows them to get away with not using genuine parts - A guy on ozaudi was complaining they replaced his windscreen with the cheapest option they could find which was horrible, wasn't perfectly curved and his wipers would lift of his screen etc.

The way O'Brien were talking was that I could take them the car and my policy number and they would take care of it.
