  • Bit of a rumble from the back?

    Hi All

Does anyone else have a bit of a rumble from the back end when getting over about 70kph? Not sure if its the exhaust/tyres or if a wheel bearing has gone (which surely is rare on the rear?) but anything over 70k's and its quite a noticable rumble, just wondered if it was just my car or if they are a bit noisy?

explain what u mean by rumble?
is it a droning, a scrubbing, a vibration etc?
does it happen when you are rolling along at 70 cliicks, coasting, relenting, accelerating?

Jack up the rear end and rotate the wheel listening for any bearing noise, also try and laterally move the wheel, feeling for excessive free play. Do this on both wheels.

Not completly rare to have a rear wheel bearing go - my passenger side rear wheel bearing is stuffed - Dealer replacing it tomorrow

Mine had no descernable movement - but when I jacked it up and spun the wheel it rumbled like hell (but only spinning it forwards - backwards it was pretty quiet)
Just picked it up from the dealer - all fixed

Dealer has said it out of shape rear tyres, so getting them replaced, had cheap Kumos on so going for something decent.

Bought my '07 Polo GTI on Friday.
Took it for a test drive and noted a very loud roar from the rear left, which increased with speed.
Checked the tyres when I got back and asked the dealer to come for a run and was told it was the tyres which would be replaced before delivery (3 well worn ContiSport2 and an odd Eagle F1 on the passenger rear.)

Picked it up yesterday with 4 brand new Bridgestone Adrenalin's, but the noise is still there
Had the car checked by Camden GTI who have diagnosed it as the left rear bearing. Apparently because of the sealed nature of the rear bearing, the old check the wheel with a shake doesn't show it up.
Mine appears to make the noise only forwards too..

Booked in with the dealer next week under warranty

Yep common for the tyres to Scallop/Sawtooth and gives the wheel bearing drone effect for sure, and yes the rear bearing is a cassette bearing and doesnt need to have play to be noisy, same as a front one
