Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

    Upgrading stock RCD 200 with a RCD 310 Head unit?

    Hi all

    Was looking at options in regards to hooking up an aux in for the RCD 200 and found the can bus adaptors go for around $150 for a basic one to $350 for a decent one with ipod control, then i thought it may be better to just upgrade the unit to a newer vw model like the RCD 310, same canbus which has all inputs and looks great

    The faceplate is a totally different shape. The RCD310 doesn't seem like you could trim it to fit either.

    A basic Apline or Pioneer aftermarket HU would probably sound better and have more features.

      dam! its a shame as it would fit the whole stock look of the car, aftermarket head units always look ricey

        True. I have seen a couple of installations with a double din touch screen that fit in well (as there's minimal buttons and no knobs sticking out)

          someone on here has a car PC install that look OEM. All there is a touch screen with no buttons and you can customise the interface to have the same colours and scheme of the car.

            Saw that thread, awesome job but way to much work It would be nice if a simple fabrication could allow the new unit to fit snuggly

              I put a Pioneer Avic F900BT into mine which fit pretty well for an aftermarket unit. Had to spend a bit of time adjusting the brackets and trimming the fascia to get a nice flush fitment

                No way it would fit sorry
                Probably wouldnt work anyway as the RCD 310 works off a totally different CAN-BUS system 9N polo have no gateway CM like the Golf Jetta etc etc
                Also the RCD 200 needs terminal 15 (ignition power) to turn it on where as the RCD 310 only has terminal 30 (battery power) to it all the time its just the CAN-BUS that actually switches it off

                  Hmm my RCD 200 turns on with no key in the ignition, but i think i know what your saying, the relays in the can-bus on the newer models

                  Spewin, can anyone recomend a decent CAN adaptor for the 200 that charges ipod and changes tracks via the head unit for around $200?
