Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Is it worth replacing the cup holder?

Hi all, as you all probably know the cup holders is useless and jams all the time, the dealer has offered to replace mine under warranty and im having second thoughts about it as i hear a lot of people get squeeks and rattles after they remove the dash..

It hasnt jammed again since ive adopted the slowly closing method

    Is it worth replacing?

Don't think the dash would have to come out to replace it, so I'd go for it.

Warranty is a distant memory for me

ah good, do they replace it with the same style holder? its more or less a design fault

More than likely. Probably banking on you being out of warranty next time it breaks

I never use mine any more and just use the two spots between the seats

Can't see much point in replacing it given its their inherent design which causes the issues rather than a specific fault with your cup holder.

Still, free stuff is free so might as well do it
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting

if you're gentle with it, it's "ok". I did break one of the finger thingys on it early on, but still functional.

Ah good to hear, I had it jam a couple of times, i figured that once you pop the front cover off, you can simply just pull it out with a little force.. might just leave it as is, got a *****load of other warranty stuff to sort like the wheel bearing and aircon dying for the 2nd time, kinda pissing me off since its a new car...

Yet the engine makes it all worth while

Mine is jammed shut as well!
Which dealer in Melbourne are you taking it back to?
Did they say how long it was gonna take to fix?

                    cheers

I had mine replaced almost 2 years ago when it got stuck in the closed position.

There were no rattles or squeeks as a result of changing the cup holder.
