No filter required/ none fitted to manual box..............vwtech
No gearbox filter, the capacity is 2L which is unfortunately a tiny bit less than two bottles of Redline. It's nice and easy to do yourself, the only hard part is tracking down a 17mm hex socket to take the sump plugs off.
Previous Rides: Polo GTI, Mx5 10AE, MY05 WRX WRP10, Renault Sport Clio 172
Current Ride: Evo 8 MR, Fabia MK3

You could use two M10 nuts with 17mm hex screwed on M10 bolt, Loctite them or weld them to form longer hex, insert it in 17mm ring spanner or socket.

Just did this bolt and nut trick with weld on my Polo - worked a treat. I couldn't get the tool locally either. However mine only took just less than 2 bottles of Redline. Even tried taking the weight of the front with a jack to increase the height of the filler, but oil was still coming out the filler. Can only think that maybe it didn't drain fully. The amount of oil that came out was definitely less than what I put back in, so I feel happy enough.
thanks for the help folks.
gavin, thanks for the offer of fixing the pesky standard cpu but i'll be keeping her standard for the time being. Any $$$ i have to spend on car mods are getting built up to spend on my torana which is about to score a new motor im building, repaint, etc etc etc.

for anyone interested - I have found that the best 17mm socket tool can be made by grinding the rounded base off of a standard VW wheel bolt, and cut off the thread. The hex section is just the right length to go the full depth of a 1/2" 17mm socket and hte full depth of the plug.
