my 1.6 Polo is having some high fuel consumption issues at the moment and i dont know why....
the worst im getting is about 11 or 12, which is ferral, and i can basically watch the needle drop when i have people in the car...
im struggling to get 400 to a tank before it goes to the red zone...

RACQ did a test on the car and it came out at 11L/100k

Was the worst out of all they tested.

Does it smell fuelly when you start it cold and does it splutter when cold?

Change the temp sender. Its in the water outlet housing on the end of the block above the gearbox and has 4 wires going into it.

Depending on which one it is should be $20 - $40 and will cost you fuel if it is crap. Imparts should have one down there.

What were you getting before this thirsty episode. My 8v would have whooped it for economy and performance

it runs normally and performs normally, i dont know, there is no tell tail soot on the rear bumper to suggest rich running... maybe its the cold weather with more time on "choke" and the fact that i've been taking smaller trips lately

Does it have a cat in the exhaust?

I had a MK3 16V that had been modified and they hung the lambda probe onto the heatshield around the exhaust. It was in fresh air so the ECU assumed the car was constantly running weak.

I would have a look at the temp sender first and then check out the output from the lambda probe.

Did you try to put injector cleaner in the tank?
I use - Interject injector cleaner.

If the injector cleaner doesn't help had it properly diagnosed, changing sensors and quesing will only cost you more at the end.

ECU will compensate. When you switch the engine "off" your possibly driping injectors will waste you fuel even when you don't drive. Air/fuel ratio alone means nothing if you don't check exhaust gases with 5 gas analyser. ECU light on the dashboard will not come "on" untill it is realy bad!

So proper diagnosis before replacing any sensor will save you $$$ and time.
