Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2nd gear not entirely in...

lol Kinda hard to explain it in plain english but I'll try my best...

Have you guys ever shifted to 3rd and felt that the 2nd gear wasn't in gear properly before going in to 3rd gear?

    For example:
I shift from 1-2 and it's fine; then from 2-3.. my 2nd gear clicks into a slot b4 going into third... would it be problem with my 2nd synchros? everything is fine, no noise - jolts - grinds; just feels like its not in gear properly.

If it happens to you then you should know what I mean sorry for the confusion!

Does it feel like it moves about 1cm or so closer towards the drivers seat?

I've had this before - I think it's the first gear lockout failing to disengage sometimes when you coast to a halt in a high gear.

I've not had this problem for a while though - since I've gained more confidence in the car, I've been engine braking and shifting through the gears when slowing down.

Isn't it better for the car to let the brake pads do the braking?

I'll put clutch in, do the braking, then a quick blip of the throttle with the right side of my foot before engaging 2nd (most commonly). 1st is typically hard to reach, but much easier than in the 02 Honda Civic I had before.
