    crunching. 2nd to 3rd

Ive had this a couple times.

One when i was putting a 5.7 litre manual ute with an exhaust to shame and once when i was putting up a bloody good fight against a VXR Astra (hsv)

dont think i had the clutch completely depressed and i was shifting with a bit of pace

Slow it down a bit, see if it helps. sure has for me never had it since

Seems this is starting to become a common problem with the Polo gearboxes.

I don't personally rush my changes, so I've never had any problems with mine (other than a slight reluctance to go into first sometimes when stationary). Quite a few people have had problems with the 1-2 change, though - and Ben_GTI needed a new gearbox after he ended up with a box full of neutrals.

It seems rather odd since the same engine/gearbox has been presumably used in various Audis and VWs before (including the Mk IV GTI?).

its only when i try and change at redline.....every single time is does it ...im depressing the clutch all the way ..still !! its starting to bug me ,,, when i change a bit slower its fine...should i have it checked out or is it normal to do that ?

by the way i absolutley smashes an xr8 and ss through 1st 2nd and top of third before i got scared and slowed down .....biggest smile on my face.

back to the crunching.. any other advice?

          cheers

I've done it a few times shifting quickly from 2nd to 3rd.

I noticed that the clutch doesn't really fully disengage unless its fully to the floor, something that i wasn't used to. So when i was fanging around in my last cars, a quick shift and i wasn't to the floor, it was fine.

If i do that in the pog it will grind in a little. I actually tested it tonight, and made sure i was fully to the floor and changed as quickly as i could, just slipped in no worries.

Something that only happens to me with quick shifts, but i'll have to get used to fully depressing it.

edit: I realise from what your saying it won't fix your problem, but it fixed mine. *shrug*

Hey Veee1.8t, MAte i am having similar problems with my gear change from 1st to 2nd @6000rpm. My box should be getting replaced in the next couple of weeks. The only way for me to change gears without crunching is for me to change like a granny would, whihc in my opinion isnt good enough so i told them so. Here is a UK site that also has 1 or 2 memebers with the same problem. http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/poloforu...er=asc&start=0

There is nothing wrong with the basic gearbox. It has a cable shift, and if you try and change gear too fast, you'll have problems-eventually stretching the cables.
                It's operator error-I've run 14.4 for 400metres,so I can't be changing gear too slowly......and I've never had a problem.
                Cheers

I would think that unless the fundamental design of the gearbox has changed since your car was made, you will continue to have the same problem even when gearbox is replaced/fixed.

This whole gearbox thing is strange - I read in reviews where previous generations of Polos suffered chronically from gearbox problems - surely this would have been fixed by now.

Our Polo cops a little bit of a hard time - it shifts nicely.

The gearbox is based on the old 1.8 Turbo boxes used in Golf's for years - so I don't think its a problem related to the gearbox in general I think Shane is just unlucky.

I had this clunk from 2nd to 3rd, and now I don't. It just just stopped one day. My first track day at Wakefield I had 3rd gear clunk every pass down the straight. I haven't change my driving style or the speed I change gears.

                        Crappy clutch Grind or Clunk?

sorry guys but the gears should not grind during a change up at any RPM!.... weather it be a golf or a polo i would take it back and demand VW fix it!....... it looks as tho VW may have been a bit slack in fitting a clutch that can do the job demanded it's very demanding drivers..... if enough people have the problem VW will have to address it on a larger scale.....
again..... i say, take it back......
                        mario.

if its a definate clunk when shifting at Redline (6500-7500RPM) you will have to double clutch it to bring the engine speed back upto flywheel speed... your shifting from 7000rpm....flywheel and engine are spinning to far apart..hence the clunk as the gear engages.... When you put the clutch in and change gears give your throttle a tap to bring engine speed up before you release the clutch in the next gear....this is done very quick and may need some practise to get it right....
remember.. clutch in.....quick tap (throttle)....clutch out.. you should see improvements right away.... let me know how you go.
