  • Polo GTI Tyre Pressures?

Hooked up my wheels to a BP auto air compressor & it said I had 42 psi in the front wheels but on the fuel cap sticker it says 26 kpa front 24 rear, these seem ridiculously low, kpa surely isnt the same as psi? Does anyone know the correct psi that should be in front & rear wheels? Btw, only had the car 3-4 weeks so this is what the dealership inflated to.

No ... kpa is definitely NOT the same as psi. 42 psi might be slightly high (I run mine at 40).

    Cheers,

I think the almost correct translation of the 2.6/2.4 on the fuel lid is 37psi front, 34 psi rear

Probably OK for the OEM tyres

a bit high if you replace with stiffer sidewall tyres

                Why?

I wouldnt recommend less than 38psi on ANY normal car tyre. (including semislicks etc)

I run 40 front and 38 rear. I find the car handles more naturally and gets the best fuel economy with these pressures.

The majority of semi slicks work best at around 36lb HOT.This translates to 30lb or less cold. You can't generalize with tyre pressures-road tyres are a lot different pressure wise to race tyres. We've used under 30lb cold many times in Sports Car/Tourers around 1200kg.

Thanks guys, I will put 40 up front & 38 rear then as that seems to have some consensus Not gonna blowout at 42 so probably no rush hey

The Pog is pretty light. I'd agree with you for a heavier car, but you can overinflate tyres, and lessen both grip and ride quality. Most people get the 38+ message from advanced driving courses, and there's nothing wrong with that, it's just that the audience often comprises Falcadore owners, which need those sorts of pressures.

Also depends on tyre characteristics. High pressures can be quite counterproductive to grip on tyres with stiff sidewalls, but beneficial for soft sidewalls (and prevent damage)

Best to experiment and reach your own conclusions (and post them here )

Also a reminder to check your pressures again now the weather is cooler. You'll be quite surprised how much lower a tyre will be today (cold, at 15C ambient) relative to a month ago (cold, at 25C ambient)
