The only road noise I get annoyed with is traffic noise coming through the door.
I find myself opening and shutting the driver's side door at least once a week as I am certain that the amount of noise I am hearing must be from the door being ajar, but it does not improve after a sturdy shut. A little frustrating hearing every truck going the opposite direction whoosh by when sitting in traffic on the way to work.
Still, music goes up and it goes away.Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting

Light cars have less padding.
I almost always drive with the window down, both if I have a hat on.
The glass should be fine, you could pull apart the doors and fill them with sound insulation along with the wheel arches, but you might not get great results.
If you drive the car hard the chassis will start to move around a little (stiffer suspension helps), then the dash talks to you wherever you go...
