  • Little bit of advice

    Good afternoon everyone,

Hope everyone is enjoying a well deserved day off.

Being fairly new to the forum and new to vw i need a bit of advice.

Im pretty keen to buy this european turbosmart or GFB bov.. cant remember which brand(thanks to my older brother for getting the thought stuck in my head, bloody S15 driver...)

Im currently using forge 007 dv. I will be flash tuning my car and i just wanted a bit of noise aswell for when u let go of the loud pedal. Is the bov suitable for the polo gti 1.8t and even after the flash tune??????
Or will the forge dv make more of a noise after the tune than it does now?

Next thing is regarding flash tunes. Now i realise this will spark a debate. Please do not allow this to happen. I need unbiased and informative suggestions.

APR are asking what about 1,800 dollars for the tune.
I heard about Revo Technik which from what i can tell is still a flash tune (please correct if i am wrong) it yields slightly more power and slightly less torque than APR. But its significantly cheaper.

My question is, what are the differences between revo and APR... are they as good as eachother? does one have a reputation for stressing the turbo out more and causing damage? Also... to what level do these tunes raise boost?

And ive heard about some sps switching ???? can anyone shed a bit of light on this for me.

    details about REVO

Mitch, can't tell you anything about BOVs...they don't float my boat but you can read all about my REVO experience here, including the dyno sheet for my car at the recent vortex dyno day. You can see the other results for the day here and judge for yourself about Polo tunes (My nic is "yawno" on vortex )

Comparisons are odious -- I am very happy with my tune -- yes, it is a chip tune, loaded through the OBD port and SPS switching refers to Serial Port Switching, which is basically a little 'dongle' you can buy from REVO that enables you to switch which map you want to use, and adjusts timing and boost accordingly. I have the SPS 2, which allows me to switch between stock, 95 RON fuel, 98 RON fuel and 100 RON (V-power Racing), as well as an anti-theft program. Switching is dead simple and takes about 20 secs.

REVO doesn't yet have the dealer support of some of the other chip tunes -- I had to get mine done in Sydney. But I have found Paul at www.revotechnik.com.au great to deal with. The price was good, too but best of all it has worked very effectively and smoothly for me (which matters more than price ).

I am sure guys with GIAC and APR will offer their thoughts and experiences, too. I know MACCAA is pretty happy with his Oettinger tune, and you'll see his results from the dyno day in that listing.

      Hey Mitch,

re the BOV, I have been looking into this a fair bit of late and whilst most makers will tell you the Polo gti/Audi will work with a Dual type BOV the independant tuners articles I have come across all reckon that venting to atmosphere will lose some tune. If you are willing to sacrifice some performance for noise then do for something like the Turbosmart etc.

Otherwise stick with the Forge/ a true DV system. Over the standard DV you will apparantly get slightly better performance as apparantly the bosch unit is designed to leak boost. Not sure if that is true of the latest revision of the DV in the polo, would have to check the model numbers.

Also it seems the recommendation is to use a better DV once you chip.

... so stay with what you got... : )

        Thanks for your replies...

In regards to DV, i think i might take you up on your advice and stay with the Forge. Dont want to lose tune.

How much is the sps2 ontop of the revo tune? And please tell me about this anti theft function, i like the sound of that

Its quite hard to steal a modern VW without the keys. I would think you can find out about the anti theft features by reading on revos website.

About $300, but I heard (a) there was a special on ...and (b) they might not have any left

When you switch the anti-theft on, using the SPS switch, it allows the car to start, but the car will only idle. Sort of a belt and braces approach which supports the immobiliser. Good if you leave the car somewhere unattended like airport car park

              Little bit of advice

Since my car is a weekender and lives all week locked up in a garage i think i would just get the one tune for 98 fuel and be done with it.

I dont have to worry about it sucking loads of juice because i only drive it a couple times a week and i just want more power !!!

Also hopefully dont have to worry about it being stolen being in my garage and all... in a pretty safe area.
