Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Bushings worn off

Hey guys i changed my tyres the other day and I wanted to do an alignment and the fellow told me he can't because the bushings are worn. He showed me this by slamming the breaks and you could actually see the wheel kind of "dangle". So i took it to my " local" mechanic and I showed him the action the tyre specialist showed me and he said its normal for the wheel to react like that when you slam the breaks its nothing to worrie about. Any opinion on this? and has anyone replaced the bushings ?

    Have a read though here:

The bushes are cheap, but a few hours work to fit.

Which bushes are we talking about here? The ones in the wishbone? The back one often suffers first but the wheel will move back and forth in the arch to some extent even with new bushes.

hey guys i jsut rang up Essendon and Barloworld VW they both said it will cost $180 each. Apprently you have to buy the full set including the control arm!!! This is a huge rip off! considering all i need are the rubbers which have worn off. any suggestions guys?

I don't think you'd be getting the control arms included for that price... The ones that commonly break are the rear control arm bushes.

I think Jmac had a few sets of the Seat ones, i've got the whiteline ones.

The standard ones are very soft, personally, you'd be better off getting the Seat ones. Think about any other work you want done at the same time, these are a bit difficult to do without the right equipment and could be costly to install at the stealership.

Assume you're out of warranty? Should be covered.

I've got my car booked in this week at the dealership to check a front end knock, I suspect it's bushes. I'll be wanting them covered under warranty, but if not I'm not too fazed as I'll be replacing the bushes when I do the suspension, hopefully in the next few months.

Will keep you posted if covered under warranty
