  • Strange noise when driving in rain.....

As all of you know, Melbourne had a little bit of rain over the weekend. Driving home from the city I noticed an intermittent 'banging'. It was more pronounced when I accelerated, but would also appear when driving over a pot hole. I got home and had a look, but the undertray and everything was all still intact. I left it overnight and then went for a test drive the next morning to find the problem. However, it had gone completely? Is my car allergic to water?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check your drop links and control arm bushes if you're getting a clunking over potholes. Have a search for these on here, there's a few threads.

Also, it wasn't in time with the wipers was it? If the wipers are slightly out of adjustment, they can whack the window frame every now and then.

No, I eliminated the obvious causes (like wipers). Control arm bushes were mythought too, but can't think why it would only happen in the wet?

What mods (if any) do you have?

It could be water in your sway bar bushes making them creak when they get wet?

The polo has a stock front swaybar so even without any mods, its possible.

The only mods are EBC front brakes and slotted rotors and a dogbone mount the PO installed

The drivers side wiper on my car occasionally hits my A pillar when the wipers are on.

Could be a cause of your clunk, although I suspect bushes/rods first and foremost.

                  +1 with Ben's comment

Axle tramp/traction control sounds especially horrible when the control arm bushes are stuffed. The control arm bushes maintain the wheel position, they get especially worked with the traction control starts to pulse the brakes
