Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Checked the earthing connections and nothing wrong there. Just met another polo owner who had the exact same problems and aparently after a while of this happening, the car would no longer start. Long story short, VW replaced the battery under warranty.

Just hope its the same problem and not anything else cause I hate electrical gremlins.

Thanks for everyones input. Much appreciated guys.

      Hi guys,

My car has been having issues as described above.

How many earth points are there? There's the main one from the battery to the body, plus another one below and in front of the battery. Any others? Guessing there's one from the motor or alternator to the chassis somewhere.

Have yet to scan for fault codes. I have run my multimeter across the battery (replaced this about 6 months ago), which is reading 12.6 volts with the car off and 14 point something with it running.

I've recently been getting the temperature alarm on random occasions too when starting the car in the morning. Coolant levels look ok, and the light goes away if I turn off and start the car again.

Haven't had the steering problem. Sounds possibly dangerous!

Since i fitted the new battery - I've come to notice when the car is stationary and i turn the steering wheel that the headlamps dim quite noticably..

          Anyone else noticed this?

There are quite a few threads about it. maybe do a bit more searching?

You'll probably find there is corrosion on both ends of the battery earth & positiveve cables. Also corrosion on the wiring going into the power steering and corrosion on the wires & relay / fuse terminals in the box at the front right. Possibly the fuses/ relays are beyond help & need replacement. They all need to be cleaned - maybe check for resistance with an ohm meter.

My earth lead was knackered. Check that you have the same voltage across the 2 battery terminals as you do from the positive battery terminal to somewhere on the car body. (as per post above this could be a corrosion issue as well, but my lead was stuffed)
