Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • ABS brake pump FAIL

Hi, an ABS warning light (amber, not red) came up on the dash and brought my Polo to a K-mart mechanic who did a diagnostic (the nearest mechanic at the time). The computer said "code found:01276 ABS HYDRAULIC PUMP-V64". The mechanic told me that it could be the ABS fluid pump which is faulty but could not identify the real issue. The price for a new pump is $2,000 (just for the part) !! Anyway, I got charged $92 for the diagnostic and does not have a real answer about what is wrong. The mechanic told me that it could be just the controller of the pump or even a wiring problem...

Has anyone had the same issue? What should I do?

    Thanks for your help,

Go to a dealer, and get it looked at. If the car is under warranty, you should be able to get it sorted for free.

Seeing as your car is 2003, looks like it is out of warranty.

I would avoid Kmart and would go to an independent VW / AUDI specialist if I were you. Derek at European Autotech (Mona Vale), Seb at EuroAutomotive (Girraween) and Matt at Camden GTI (Golf Loon on the forum) all come highly recommended - suggest looking at recommended repairers and parts suppliers for their details.

Just because an item is flagged on the code doesnt mean its the unit, the description given is very vague. ABS pump then what??? implausible signal, low voltage , resistance,?????? more description reqd so like some have mentioned avoid K mart

              ABS brake pump FAIL

Thanks everyone. Indeed, my car is out of warranty. In case it's the ABS pump, would you replace it with a 2nd hand pump from the wrecker?

Get it diagnosed before mentally spending money on it. like Jmac said you can't go from what Kmart told you, they are a supermarket not VW specialist.

How much do you think it would cost me to get a specialist to find out the problem? I am thinking of going to EuroAutomotive (Girraween) ?

You want to know how much to scan the ABS first. Then go from there. I would expect them to do that for $50 or less tbh.

After that they'll be able to give you estimates of what it is likely to cost to fix.

Thanks for the info. I wanted to go to the Girraween centre but could not find it. All I could find is http://euroautomotive.com.au at Botany. Is there another Girraween centre? If so, do you have the phone number and address ?

                      Thanks hips !

If you do actually need a new ABS unit it might be worth investigating getting yours repaired. There is a place in the UK that reconditions them at a fraction of the cost of a new one (I read about it on either the Brickyard and/or Briskoda forums). Even after paying freight you will be way ahead.

I have a source here now to do the same thing as well as resetting airbag microprosessors, but still i say if its flagging a unit you must get the full description of the code. There is more to a code than just replace, why is the code there???? normally the code will give a description like say ABS unit low voltage, well lets look why??? high resistance again lets look why, i caution you here mate, the big question i ask nowadays is is EVERY THING else ok???? a lot of Kmart and the likes have generic scanners and whatever the scanner says thats what it needs WRONG!!!!!!!!!
