  • My new Polo GTI..now what mods to do?

    Hi
This is my new (used) polo that i picked up 2 days ago. using it for business/personal use (i'm a sales rep) and now need to decide what mods to do to her. As its being used everyday, the mods need to keep car in a daily driver comfort and condition. i was thinking the following but also have some questions as i'm not the most mechanically minded:
    1. Blow off Valve and turbo timer.
Will they increase/decrease life of turbo/engine? and is there a good place for install around western sydney?

    2. Stereo Upgrade with bluetooth for work.
Having radio intermediately drop out of reception on all stations (AM/FM1/2) so a real no brainer. Getting this put it next saturday http://www.jvc-australia.com/JVC/cli...=28&prodID=488. not the prettiest unit, but has bluetooth and getting it for the right price!

    3. APR Chip.
Bang for buck you cant go wrong

    4. Lowering a little for better handling during my spirited work trips.
Will coilovers give the same sort of ride comfort as standard springs shocks?

    5. Bonnet Painted (following grill lines) cos they look tough. Might buy a 2nd bonnet to paint incase i dont like it one day

    Thx in advance

Do you mind if I ask how old, how many km, what options and for how much? Private or dealer?

welcome mate i will go response to each one in order
      1. dont put a turbo timer on it doesnt need it VW unlike jap crap makes sure the turbos cool down propery and the only thing a turbo timer will do is allow easier acces to thiefs.
      2. well not really a question
      3. any chip manufacter is the way to go just go with some1 who has a dealer close to you and offers good support
      4. i wouldnt use the same shocks if ur lowering it but from a few other guys on here the h and r springs seem pretty good. From personal experience coilovers will NOT give u a comfortable ride
      5. tbh leave it for awhile u might grow to like the bonnet as is

If you're after a BOV make sure it's a dual port, not full atmospheric. I recommend the Turbosmart Kompact Dual Port BOV, others are running a Forge BOV.

Turbo timer is useless and not needed in these cars.

I have a GIAC chip but you will be happy with any of them from what I've read. The difference is unbelievable.

I have H&R Springs with stock shocks. Would like to change the shocks eventually, but for now this is a good solution. Ride is slightly more bumpy but not uncomfortable.

          Thx for quick replies

She was purchased from VW dealer in Syd for $16000 with 60km's on her. 3mth/5000km std warranty and if it is serviced with dealer they gave 5yr/175000km limited warranty. No fancy options in it, just the usual cloth interior etc. Was traded in by 1st owner on a Golf V GTI.
As far as blow off valve goes, i like the sound but trying to convince GF to let me spend $ on something that has no benefit is hard.

            Welcome!

            1. Blow off Valve and turbo timer.

You can get a diverter valve with partial atmospheric release (for the Pssh shound), but it just does not sound right anyway. I'd be looking into the Forge diverter valves.

            2. Stereo Upgrade with bluetooth for work.

Sounds good and like you've already committed, don't be too reliant on Bluetooth, it has quality limitations.

            3. APR Chip.

Peak KW's go from 110 to 140'something depending on which brand.

APR is the most common based on a recent survey, but its worth having a look at all options as some of the others seem to be able to liberate a few extra KW's. Do a search for ECU and chipping, etc to find.

            4. Lowering a little for better handling during my spirited work trips.

You don't have to get coilovers for the drop or handling, many on here have H&R springs with Bilstein shocks or other combos with good results.

I recently got Coilovers, so I'm sitting lower and am happy with the results.

Swaybars are readily available from whiteline, generally other parts come from the UK or pay someone locally a bit more.

            5. Bonnet Painted (following grill lines) cos they look tough. Might buy a 2nd bonnet to paint incase i dont like it one day

If you like it, but you will stand out (for better or worse).

            -----------------------------

There are lots of possibilities, I'd be looking at the air induction system (Seat Intake) as a definite accompaniment for the the Tune.

The best thing to do is read, there is so much good info on here, you just need a week to read and absorb.

Also, I'd be happy to show you my car (I'm on the other end of the M2), or maybe you'd like to come on the VW Cruise on Sunday? PM me if you are interested.

I'm a man of leisure for the time being, so drop me a note when you are interested.

Don't need to be too fussed about mentioning shop names, assume its Peak RPM?

The suspension (BC Coilovers) I thought were an Ebay brand, but the name has come up before. Maybe ask if they have been installed by them before. Always going to be cheaper to import your own, but that comes with some risks. Have a look at some websites: Orange Tuning, Awesome GTI, Venom Motorsport.

They seem to sell Revo Technik ECU remap, SidGTi on here has that tune, might be worth asking him about it.

I got the car ECU flashed this morning with GIAC software. WOW is all i can say.
Its a totally different car now.
The process took approx 40mins from start to finish.

Good to hear man. Always puts a smile on your face to feel the car, even 12 months after getting it chipped.

I'll make a suggestion that you look at upgrading your Turbo Intake Pipe (Forge do one for the Polo), Air Filter (K&N or BMC), and SEAT PD160 intake.

Also, if you are looking to buy a BOV, I have a Forge Dual Port BOV that I am looking to get rid of. PM me if you are interested. I am in Sydney for the next week or so.

Not necessarily true mate. Now that your car is chipped, your boost has gone from about 13-14psi to about 18-19psi. That increase in pressure puts strain on the standard plastic BOSCH valve, which will most probably leak boost. My car leaked heaps of boost after APR chipping which is why I changed over to a Turbosmart Kompact Series Dual Port BOV. A good quality BOV will not leak boost. Whatever you choose, as said before, make sure it is either a dual port BOV or full recirculating, as a full atmospheric BOV will not get enough air back through the MAF and keep bringing up the EPC light.

As for a black bonnet, here's mine. I also have a black roof...

                        PM sent
Arthur (who did flash) recommended the Forge TIP and some new suspension to get power down better.
Looking at TIP and KW V1 basis coilovers. not cheap to buy in Aus tho.
                        V1 - $2200
                        V2 - $3200
                        V3 - 3500

The TIP is not as usefull (as shown on dyno results) as the Seat intake (and its cheaper).
KW's are supposed to be great, but not cheap. Why dont we catch up for a beer and coffee so I can show you / explain to you what you get for your money...
