Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • pulsing scrubbing noise under brakes and cornering

    hi all
recently, I've noticed a noise from the front of my GTI...
when I'm on the brakes (hard and soft braking) i hear a scrub noise that "pulses".
it stops when i come to a complete stop.
i don't hear it on acceleration.
it appears to be magnified when i turn to the right...
it appears to go away once the car has warmed up

one more thing, im pretty sure i haven't hit anything hard to damage suspension.

my guess is - its front left brake...the disc may be distorted, or pad worn funny, or there's something caught in there. the car is no longer under warranty.

it is beginning to sh*t me...

Pulsing implies it is happening on the same point on rotation. If you are slowing down, are the pulses slowing with the car? The rotors being unevenly worn may have this effect, but if you have not been driving the car hard, I would not expect this to happen.

How many kms? have you had any component of the brakes replaced to date?

yes the pulses do slow down as the car slows.
i think its definitely rolling/motion related...so that's why i think the disc rotor could be stuffed. but then why when i turn right does it seem to be louder, but at the same rate? that makes me think the wheel bearings could be shot???

km....40000 - all my driving (got the car new)

Have a look at the disk surface and see how evenly its wearing.

Could be as simply as a slightly warped rotor from uneven brake wear.

keep an eye on this post, i'll report back what i find....

            uneven discs

I had the same thing , a slight pulsing . I went for a hard run through the hills and all is good ( was about 2.00am when it was cooler a few days ago)

slackness on my part - i havent yet pulled off a wheel to look at the discs/pads, BUT...over xmas weekend i paid closer attention to it.
the noise seems to be highlighted when the car is dead cold. after warming up it isnt as loud. its not just under brakes that i hear it too, either in gear or rolling in neutral, i hear it clearly from 0kph to 30kph. then i suspect that the tyre noise/engine noise etc covers it - or it is pulsing so reguarly that it blends in with other noise. further more, i initially said i hear it louder while turning - thats only cause of the low speed - it makes no difference if i turn.
its definetely a pulsing noise - it increases in frequency the faster the speed.
