  • Bad knocking sound on full lock

Hey guys just wondering if any of you have had this problem and what was fixed? The knocking sound that I've had previously that went away for a while has returned and only seems to happen when turning to the right at or close to full lock when moving from stationary position or when turning right onto my driveway. Sounds horrible like something is breaking or really friggin loose. The sound has occured prior to lowering the car but went away for a while after lowering but has now returned in a worse state. HELP!!! Did a search online and it seems that it may be either the engine mount, gearbox mount or CV joints? Any suggestions? The car has done about 42000k's and will be booked in to VW for a service and to get it looked at. Its lowered with Bilstein B8's and H&R springs. Its got the APR engine mount. No FSB or RSB. Recently took off the strut brace and it seems the sound is now only intermittent. Weird...

Thanks in advance. Any suggestions or experience on this problem before JMAC? Cheers.

My bet would be on the CV joint (it is usually a horrible noise that gets worse over time click click click)

Drivers side tends to go first

In my pog (with similar km) all the bushes are stuffed (control arm and sway bar) it would be worth getting these done at the same time.

    good luck

Before changing my suspension, I had some knocking noises when going into reverse, on hard lock and sometimes under braking.

The bearings (at first I thought topmounts) were pretty wrecked, not sure if the noise is similar, but apparently these parts are more prone to wear with lowered cars.

The replacement parts were cheap (less than 100 for bearings on both sides) but it would take a bit of labour to get the old ones out and new ones in...

Called VW today and described the sound to them and immediately they said its most likely the CV joint so they'll look into it when I bring the car in for service. Hopefully they fix it.

            Hey Dave.
First thing i thought was the CV joints when i read the full lock and knocking sound.

Let us know how much they are charging to replace them.

Best of luck with it all.

Hmm, click click click will be Cv perhaps but you say knocking, maybe terminlogy, going up the driveway hmm. Full lock and do 360 turn itll click click mate, that is the cv letting go. Suppose if yours is bad enough it could come across as a knock.
                Cheers

Yes, clicking more than knocking is the sound of a cv. Just a thought: check the tie rods to the front ARB. If these are bent or if the suspension is lowered, a knocking noise can occur

could it be your steering column (?) rubbing on your turbo dump pipe? I see you have an after-market dump pipe, and i know a similar problem occurs on the S3s.

Hey thanks for the input guys. My car has been lowered but the problem had existed prior to Amy lowering or downpipe upgrades and did go away for a while after lowering but has suddenly increased in frequency and volume. It kind of sounds like an initial creaking sound like a solid object is being twisted and then the moment the car gets moving the knocking sound occurs. This only occurs at close to or at full lock turning right. I've also recently noticed that it happens more so when the car is cold or first thing in the morning.

Thanks Jmac. Any ideas what this may cost me if it is the strut top mounts? Hopefully it will be covered under warranty. Is it a common problem (with or without lowering)? Thanks

Sounds similar to what I had before I changed mine.

Topmounts don't last long on lowered cars from what I've been told. Have a look at my topmounts thread for a picture of what the good bearings looked like (the bad ones went to pieces) and that was <20,000 kms.

Think the bearings were 40-60 each and the topmounts were a little more.

Something like $200 plus labour (from what Pierre told me).

I too think I have this same issue, car has done 23k, and maybe 8k since lowering. Is this perhaps due to the mismatched spring strut combo (with the H&R's) causing a massive increase in wear, or are others that have done the complete change getting this too???

I was actually thinking the sound was more likely to be the sway bar creaking in the bushes as the wheels "collapse" on full lock like they are meant too. I too have only noticed it on full lock turning right.

I'd struggle to believe it's a CV joint going already and the knock doesn't transmit back through the steering wheel - which I've felt on the odd car I've driven with buggered CV's.
