  • Broken Topmounts

I took my car to have some new parts installed today.

Shop called me to say the topmounts are broken, one side has spilled its ball-bearings.

As my car has done <20,000kms and <10,000kms with H&R springs (stock shocks). Has anyone else had broken topmounts?

Were you getting struts changed???? If you are rough as guts stripping them down the ball bearing will come adrift, doesnt sound like there was any issue other than roughness im afraid

How many ks has your Polo done though, there is a difference between worn and busted taking them apart. Could be wrong about the OP car , might be unfortunate his have gone early.

My theory if the shocker got its top nuts rattle gun out or in during installing the lower springs, that may have had damaged valve/s resulting bottoming out at bumps - i suspecting this because you complaint bout ur banging front end back then... plus wrong torque setting on the bearings = early fail...
i know cos i did the same mistake back in the early apprentices day lol

yeah, bearing thingies. I've kept the damaged ones, i'll put a photo tp tomorrow.

Thanks Pierre, all going well so far, scrubbing is going to be interesting to work around, but I'll do some homework tomorrow.

Well as for the very simple explaination, still dont know where you are at, I agree they could be broken, dont deny it, just havent seen it, i have seen excessive roughness too. Doesnt matter who fitted it or how it was fitted im sure we only want to know how it happened so as to avoid it. The explanation here only states yes you had broken mounts, we are a forum where people need info to help themselves, just in case it actaully happens to them too. Shame it happened at such low ksss
                    Cheers

                      Jmac,
Car had lowered h&r springs with oem shocks previously installed before being changed

To be honest its not the first polo we've seen that this has happened but its not very common especially with such low kms however being that someone else got to it prior and unsure how they installed (correct torque settings etc) its something that unfortunately happened. sydneys roads never helps and especially the car being that low and oem shocks not a fan of lowered springs i learnt years ago lol

If you ever install new shocks/coilovers its always wise to get new bearing strut tops which a lot of the kits come with now sometimes anyhow.

Outcome of the car was incredibly low to how he wanted it and the ride is quite good suprisingly and looks mint. Looks like a go-kart on cocaine lol

Very True about the Sydney roads taking their toll.

Here are a few pics of the good one, other one lost its bearings over the shop floor.

The seal looks to have had a good workout.

I found that the performance of the stock shocks with H&R springs did not last long. For the first few thousand kms, they seemed ok, but in recent months, the ride became exceedingly floaty and bumps seemed to be worse than they should.

Even after a short travel with the new suspension, the handling over bumps and uneven ground is much better. there is also the changes to the new suspension bushes (whiteline) and front sway which i'm sure both have made a contribution, so I can't say its only been the coils.

No offence ment on this thread Pierre, always interested to learn more about my car and if others are experiencing similar issues. Happy with the work you and your shop have done.

No offense taken at all dude, just wanted to share info as we all are to how to stop or prevent something like this happening. Disappointed that it took longer then it should of due to parts not in stock (nice on VW lol)

IMO if you cant afford coilovers, get springs to lower for 'now'... just be prepared your shocks will die within 15-20k. By then you should have enough $$ to grab some coilovers and feel the difference (something chronic at that) from a shock/spring combo!

Any lower and it'd be a Nascar!

The whole car should be one very tight/firm right and be some fun around the track with the bushes & sways in front and back setup!
