Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Leaking drive shaft flange seals

    Hey Guys,

I posted a thread some time ago, and this message is specifically relating to the leaking drive shaft flange seals. I finally had the car in for this to be sorted, and want to know if the dealer has actually replaced the seals. I'm a bit sceptical, because when home I jacked up the car to check their work, and it just looked the same, oily residue etc.

Jmac gave me some part no's for the flange seals etc, and I assumed they were some sort of metal cap with rubber edges. When I picked car up, I asked what was replaced, and the service guy said they replaced a felt washer on either side, found no traces of oil inside, and that the oil present underneath the car was assembly fluid. I also asked if I could see what was replaced, but it was missing.

Have they replaced/repaired the flange seals, or are they having a laugh?

Furthermore, I cleaned up the area and checked again today, and yes oil has returned...

Not sure if it's the same thing, but I went back to the dealer with my week old Polo when it appeared to have an oil leak, and the inner cv areas were covered in an oily residue. Turned out to be the protective wax that the underside of these cars are coated in, had just melted in the heat. Looked very much like an oil leak also.
