Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New Wheels

I have been searching around trying to find a relatively definitive answer to what wheels will fit the Polo, however I can't definitively work out whether the wheels in the link below will fit.

    http://www.talebtyres.com.au/product...t=&part_no=699

I will be looking to get the 17x7 with +42 offset, and looking to wrap them with 215/40R17 or 205/40R17 rubber. What do people think? will these wheels fit without any hassles, or would I need spacers.

Just for info, I ran the specs through the http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp site, and the results were 13mm less inner clearance and outer position will be retracted by 1mm.
07 Black Magic Polo GTI w/Sunroof
MODS: SEAT Intake, CC Stg 2, BMC, Whiteline RSB, Superpro Dogbone, Forge BOV, Pioneer HU w/ 12in Sub, Stubby Antenna, Tenzo-R Cuzco (Matte Black, Red Stripe), Forge TIP, Forge IC Hose, Miltek Full Exhaust
    Awaiting Install: Forge Front Strut

I'm not sure about the 215 fitting (should be ok, but if its not... then what?)

the offset, etc is fine, I think the Polo GTI was shipped with 38 or 42 offset wheels in the 6.5 wide.

They will likely need centre core adapter rings, but any good wheel shop should know this and have it included in the cost.

Nice looking wheels mate, what colour Pog are they going on?

      Hoyhoy.

Me use the same calulator & come up with 5mm less inner & 7mm extra outer,
but is this from the earlier models which had 43mm offset, later ones have 38mm. Either way me think your choice is about right.
P.S. No1. It looks like with the calcultor you have used a standard wheel offset of 35mm.
P.S. No2. Me think that 215/40's might (could still rub on inner guard when on full lock) be O.K., but not 215/45's.

Noone, they are going on a black polo. when you say your not sure about the 215 fitting, are you referring to inner wheel rubbing?

Eddy, my calculations were based on a 35mm offset, which I thought mine was. I have an 07 polo.

        thanks for the replies.

I have 17x7 45ET wheels and 215/40R17 rubber and no worries with fitment or scrubbing. Inner clearence at the front is close but no worries so if your pushing out another 3mm with 42ET you will definately have no problems! And with a bit more poke for looks and a wider trak to handle the twisties a little better

Eddy is spot on, my 06 has stock ET of 43 and later 07+ has ET of 38.

Since we're on the topic of wheels, I'm still curious in what type of rims people have on their Pogs? I was thinking of 18's but think they'll be too big and tires would just be too expensive.
                Current:
                2023 Mk2 Tiguan R - Lapiz Blue
                2015 Mk7 Golf R Wolfsburg - Limestone Grey: Stage 2
Gone but not forgotten: 2008 Polo GTI Shadow Blue

18'sl look good, but 35 profile rubber required for standard roll distance is too thin IMO for the POG.

I have 17's with Kuhmos and H&R springs, and the ride can be a bit bumpy. Personally I'm not a fan of the stock tyres either.

If you are looking to drop the car or put aftermarket suspension on it, 18's would make the ride harsh (IMO) Have a look at the Tyres thread, look around for some pics of Petrina's car on 18's. Looks weird, better dropped with 17's.

here is my favourite Pog look: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=35040

There are a couple of threads dedicated to this. Please use the "search" function to have a look.
