Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • pod filter = increase fuel consumption?

    Hi all,

After installing a pod filter onto the Polo GTI, I've noticed that fuel consumption has increased quite significantly....

Does installing a pod filter increase fuel consumption? Should I be looking to reset my ecu so the engine can remap and relearn?

    Thanks in advance all!

I would say it should be better on fuel driven under the same conditions..

The new induction roar is addictive, id say you have been a leadfoot.

Depends, it can increase fuel consumption and reduce power if its not getting the cool air feed it needs.

Sucking in hot air will only increase the fuel consumption (especially in stop/start traffic where heat soak will play a part).

Is the pod filter open, or is it shielded with a cold air feed?

the pod sits in the stock airbox however the top of the airbox has been removed...

has anyone gotten their ecu reset after an intake modification? is this necessary?

ECU reset is a simple matter of disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.

However, sitting the pod in the stock airbox with the top removed is going to allow it to suffer the effects of heat soak in stop-start traffic. I would look at fully enclosing the pod if possible.

The K&N Apollo POD kit is the ideal solution for this.

If you are going to have the top of the box open, I'd think about removing some of the rubber that forms a seal around the bonnet. This should hopefully allow more of the hot air under there to escape.

There may be side effects or implications, but from memory, Plautos had done this as had someone else...

Could be hotter air, maybe try covering the engine side of the opening more. Maybe a pic of your setup may help...

If you do not enclose the filter completely your are also risking a fine.

I had this setup on my car. removed the rubbers around the hood at the top.
