Seems the first revision (o6) had more reliable gearbox, the next version appears to be the one some people have had issues with.

Is the code on the gearbox itself somewhere? If not, how do you tell?

I thought it was the other way round, particularly when reading the fix register - but that could be cos the new ones don't have the mileage on em yet.

My GTI was first registered in NZ, in Feb 2006. So the car I believe was built in end of 2005.

The gearbox has always had a distinctive whine since I picked up the car at 17000km, but didn't get worse in the last 30000km. This is with REVO chip through it's life with me. I had about 4 track days with it. I drive hard on track. Should use more brake than downshifting too early...

Anyway, the gearbox is holding at the moment... the whine is at 4th gear from 50-60km at light throttle. Gearbox specialist thinks it's common in VWs due to crown pinion ring? - he said just live with it.

No 1st to 2nd shift ever. Currently has Redline MT90.
          06 Polo GTI - REVO Stage 2 = 140kw @ wheels.
06 Golf GTI - Bluefin Stage 1 blacked out with ED30 theme, leather, xenon, etc.

Think the Polo started out with a good gearbox, (likely late 05 builds) but they swapped it out (likely to save cost?)

I was having a convo with Desmo on the issue, he knew more about it than I did. Mine is late 05 / early 06, no issues, but only 20K Kms on it.

That sounds like very low speed for 4th. Maybe the low revs with high gearing has something to do with it?

I've got the HWY box in mine and while the shift is a little notchy at time, it is probably me just rushing things

Other major change was that the wheel offset went from +42 to +38

Yeah, I like cruising when I can. I usually do 5th during 50-60km/h on flat...
My average fuel consumption is 8.4litre / 100km... including track day and congested motorways..
I guess I am light footed!
