Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Chipped Polo Gti VS Stock VE SS

I dont have my Polo Gti anymore but I have been discussing its performance with a Mate who has a new VE SS ute..

I took it for a drive (the VE) and it goes well but I honestly thought the Polo Gti would give it the hurry up in stock form..

Does anyone have any experiences with these two cars back to back? Would anyone on here be prepared to run him at WSID, bog stock VE SS ute in 6 spd manual.

You'd get your ass kicked. I dragged a VZ Clubby yesterday (297kw) and got mine handed to me after first gear.

Like they say, there is no replacement for displacement.

Maybe a stage 3 upgrade would get it there but you would have trouble getting pwer to the ground.

I have had a similar experience to xtturbo

its a hatch, think about how it can corner, not how a turbo 6 or v8 is faster in a straight line...

Yeah the Polo GTI (and fwd cars in general) arn't really known for their handling...

Dont get me wrong, I love my car, but its in no way an optimal design for racing in any sense.

we might be going off topic, though I'd have to challenge you on that. Look at the clio sport, modest power and a well set-up chassis will keep many standard and lightly modified rear drives honest.

Clio sports at queensland raceway (which is more a power circuit) are consistently quicker (by a second or 2) than the assortment of rear drive aussie 8's getting around. Also generally quicker than most lightly modded rear drive jap imports.

I'm referring to the clio's as there's quite a few at the track days I've attended and generally carrying very few mods. trying to minimising the modification variables in my comments.

I'm boarding on believing that the old front vs rear drive performance is going the way of the dodo. horses for courses though.

But if we're talking straight line, that's a different argument.

a 13.4 1/4 mile for the SS vs. a 14.4 1/4 mile in a chipped Polo. There really is no contest.

I think the Polo can be made to handle very well, the times that jamesatfish made at Wakefield in August were very impressive, a took a friend with his Audi TTs and the Polo was much faster (good suspension setup).

Look at Plautos' recent video's of him tailing the Chevy STR8, tell me that a Polo GTI can't be a good track car.

On the other hand, why would you buy the Polo if you wanted a race car? I think for the price you pay, the Polo is a nice little package.
