I gather 1.6?? AEE engine. Change the water pump , cam belt and tensioner if you buy, If the belt brakes it wrecks itself. Common faults are throttle bodies for sure, ign coil common, and one i have seen a lot of is oil contamination on the MAP sensor, when these go they can be dear. The fix to stop oil getting to it was fitting a Mk1 golf fire trap (cant quite remember the part number) but yeah this stopped the oil getting to the air cleaner and lasted ages. Quite as strong wee car really. In the UK they came tons of choices, 1.0l, 1.1l,1.3l,1.4l,1.6l,19D and the diesel hauled.
Now the AEE engine runs on an oily rag.
Central locking isnt the most reliable, most common problem is pump failure, but golf 3 ones fit so loads around yet. Leaking diaphragm in the fuel cap lock unit is common too.
One other thing they are very common for window reg failure, if you have manual winders you are laughing. The elec ones always break.

I cant agree more... Get a Golf VR6's are around the same price now, I'd get one of them

I had a '97 Polo as my first car, handled great, was slow as crap and wasn't really that economical!

Really impressed by the quality and features of my mk3 golf, hoping the polo is similiar.

So as a everyday, reliable, not **** car, how will the polo do?

jesus thats one long link! , anyway few more extra k's , though it does have a 2.0L engine in it and over all looks quite a tidy package.
