Replacement jack

Has anyone found something usable, stable and compact to replace that pathetic thing that comes standard in our cars ? I assume all the Polo's have that strange unstable pivoting thing that looks like it is going to collapse and damage the car !

I'm after a replacement to throw in the boot and wondered if anyone else had picked up something that is like I mentioned above - usable, stable and compact ?

Supercheap sell a good quality small geared scissor jack that's ideal for the Polo. It's normally about 50 bucks, but can be got for about 35 when SC have a sale. Can be identified by a black body with a silver gear housing. I bought one a few months ago and its terrific.

I got a compact 3 stage hydraulic jack for my 4WD and kept it after selling the 4WD. It was a bit expensive (I needed something that would start low and raise tall), approx $300 IIRC (but it is strong enough to lift my loaded Transporter van). Probably a bit of an overkill for a normal car.

At least a two-sided scissor jack would be slightly more stable than the one-sided atrocity VAG supply these days. But I suppose we should be grateful we at least get a jack and a spare as standard - in the UK they get a can of goop if they are lucky

No. I keep it in a separate bag under the driver's seat.

Thanks Catfish, I picked one up yesterday .... compact enough and a damn lot more stable than the original !

I used the jack earlier in the week to lift the car while I changed the oil.

Sometimes you've gotta live life on the edge, and rely on something grossly inadequate and hope that the ground clearance is wider than your head...

I had my old Swift GTi sitting just on the jack and the whole car moved sideways, if it wasnt for the bricks I put underneath (just in case), the whole car would have gone through my fibro garage into the neighbours backyard. Lucky for me it landed on the bricks, which were sitting an inch lower than the car was when it was on the jack.

Please tell me you at least put your wheels under the car so that if it fell off the jack you had a least a chance of surviving the ensuing crush injuries

ok, ok...

Its not as bad as i made out. I was not lying under the car, I only needed to get my arm under the engine to loosten the sump nut which took very little force...
