  • Loud ticking/knocking coming from under car on full throttle...advice please.

    Hey all,

Under full throttle today in 2nd and 3rd gears I noticed quite a loud fast knocking or ticking noise coming from under the car. As soon as I took my foot off the gas, the noise stopped. It starts up around 3,000rpm. It sounded like putting a bolt in a tin and shaking it around. It was definitely a mechanical noise.

A little bit worried about this noise as it's just started. Does this noise seem familiar to anyone, or does anyone know what it may be. Clutch, drivetrain??

Please no random guesses. Only advice from those who have experienced it/know of someone who had the same thing.

Cheers in advance for all advice,

    Rhys

Sounds like pinging (detonation) to me.

Filled up with a dud tank of fuel recently?

I'd got and fill up with some fresh fuel or top up as soon as you can.

One note - if it makes bad noises at WOT, don't drive it like that!

If it was hot too that would bring on the pinking. Back off like Stuwey says.

Could be an exhaust leak? Turbo bolts maybe

That tinny noise doise sound like pinging mate, turbo bolts would sound like a wheez. Have you changed from your regular bowser????? Get someone to do some logs for you and see if it is pulling timing. Most modern cars have slight ping but the ones you actually hear are a drama and need to be checked ASAP. How many kss you at???? I had an A4 do the same and it was the MAF. I did also fit a cooler stat to keep the core temp of the engine lower and he runs it on BP . It hasnt looked back.
        Cheers

I just refilled up at a BP down the road from me this arvo, it's the one I always go to. haven't heard it after filling up and I gave it a good hit to see if it was still there tonight.

          What's WOT?

Once I heard that noise I drove it carefully home, not boosting at all.

As said above, I just filled up at my regular bowser this arvo and the sound seems to have gone. If it continues I will let you know. My car is at about 50,000k's at the moment and I've had both o2 sensors replaced.

p.s. I have only ever and will only ever use BP Ultimate.

Do the Polos have a heat shield on the down pipe? It sounds to me like the rattle of the heat shield that I have had on the Vento and is currently driving me nuts on the Cupra.

All the signs point to a dodgy batch of fuel in the previous fill causing pinking or detonation (may not have been 98 octane BP ultimate, despite coming from a filler pipe that said it was).

WOT = Wide Open Throttle (aka full throttle, pedal to the metal)

Yep agreed mate. Might be gone with the new batch. Like i mentioned do a log and see if the knock sensors are sensing knock and pulling timing.
If its gone mate keep an eye and ear out. If it comes back log it.
Havent had too many issues with the pogs other than a bad batch of fuel now and again. VWGTIs Pog was cutting out when he had his bad batch. That was bizarre. New fuel and he has had no compliants.
                Good luck mate

It does have a heat shiled, but does not look like it would move around much.
