  • Brake Pads - Replacement

Well, my day at Wakefield warped my front rotors and the pads overheated and are now breaking up.

Can anyone recommend a cheap but reasonable replacement pads (front only)?

I don't intend on tracking the car again unless I get new rotors and pads to suit, so its only for 'spirited' driving and I'm not a late braker...

Not good to hear that your rotors warped.

I'd go Dixcel rotors and EBC pads if you're going to keep your standard caliper setup, otherwise look at upgrading to a R32 setup.
    Cheers,

    John

      Thanks JCM.

For the moment I just want my car road functional, when I'm thinking about tracking again will think about upgrades to r32 or slotted rotors, etc.

One option is Bendix but I've heard mixed results. Experiences of Pogs would be ideal, pads seem to vary hugely depending on the vehicle and characteristics.

I don't think Bendix do them, unless they have in the late few months?

I was in the same boat, never intend to track the car, so I ended up going with EBC GreenStuff. No complaints here, but other people don't seem to like them and will talk you into the Red or Yellow variants, however EBC also do a standard replacement pad. Cost about $160 direct from the UK - http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/car/p...+%282005%2D%29

As for the rotors, DBA actually make one, they just don't realise they do - part no DBA802 for the MKIV Golf GTI. Otherwise EBC also do them - http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/car/p...+%282005%2D%29

If that was your first track day then your brakes are fine. . I HAD to replace mine after 3 track days. Now after the last wakie i need to change the fluid. Ordered the martini fluid yesterday so hopefully can change in the next few days

Don't know mate, pads have been noisy since trackday. Thought it was going to be glazed pads, but has not gone away. Plenty of pad left, but mechanic is telling me they're shot (due to overheating). VW pads are around $180, so may as well get something cheap or better.

I had the same problem after a day at Wakefield, as i had decided to change them I was not too worried. The noise did go away but when the rear pads were removed 3 of the 4 were cracked.

I went yellow stuff/braided lines/ Martini fluid as the car is now pretty much a trackday only device, and they have been good, though not cheap and not really for the daily commute.

Have a look at QFM in the business sales section they seem reasonable though you may have to wait a while for them to do some rears up.

Also a little hint, a LOT of VAG rear pads will fit the polo inc VR6 and Mk4, even though they are a different part number, the differences are miniscule and it opens the rear pad options up a lot.

Polo GTI 9N3 (2005 to current).

There are a few brands that do pads, EBC, Ferodo, etc.

I'd be happy to look at alternatives.

I too am after new front pads as the light is on the dash indicating replace. I do realise I probably have a few 1000 KMS left in them but would be good to be prepared.

I will watch this space and also see what gslrallysport come back with in regards to pricing.

Noone maybe we could do a group buy as I am in sydney as well.

I went with the 312mm Audi TT setup in the end.

GSL can do them, but you need to provide some pads so they can either use the backing plate or make a template.

Maybe put a message up in their Sponsor thread.

I went for a replacement for the standard caliper/rotor combination, and picked up a set of RDA slotted rotors and Remsa pads from GSL Rallysport here in Brisbane. Ended up getting Jmac to fit them and they've been excellent, no squealing and minimal break dust... but most importantly a quick heat up time even though they are high temp capable pads.

if going down the path of changing the rotors to R32 or Audi TT, is there a kit that can be purchased to do this which includes rotors, calipers, appropriate proportioning valves, hoses etc, or does it all have to be scrounged?
what kind of cost are we talking about to change the rotors to R32/calipiers?
Has someone done a how-to on this? I'll be happy to do one and take some snaps when i change my rotors. but im still about 1/2 a yr away.

I'd find some calipers / carriers from a TT (also S3 I believe), from this forum or ozaudi.

I had great luck with new rotors, so got them cheap. From memory, with somone else installing, it cost be about $600 for the upgrade with new rotors, pads, second hand calipers and carriers and good fluid.

Car pulls up hard without much effort, but if you don't plan on tracking the car, I would not bother TBH.
