Dealing with Dealers

I am in the process of negotiating for a Polo GTI. Couple of questions, how have others gone with their dealer? Do you think you got a good deal?

Anyone got a comment on WA dealers I am talking to John Hughes and Osborne Park at the moment.

I have no comment on WA dealers, but I assume they are just as bad as every other dealer...I have no trust for any of them...
My biggest bit of advice is that if you are getting screwed by them, to walk away. Look at what you want to pay, and then what they are offering. If they arn't willing to budge from that, look somewhere else to where they will meet you. When I bought my Polo GTI, i lived in Darwin, but bought it in NSW.

Never go to your nearest dealer first. Grab some quotes from a few distant dealers, until you're happy with the price & then get your local dealer to match/beat it.

Also, waiting until the end of the month to buy should get you a better deal, as dealers are looking to squeeze as many purchases in for their monthly quotas - might give you a bit more bargaining power.

Just as a guide, I ended up getting mine for $25900 DA with a few extras included (metallic paint, rubber mats, cargo net, full tank fuel), but I think I could've gone better - The day I was prepared to buy (the Saturday before the end of the month, which was the following Wed I think), my local dealer was closed. I knew I didn't have time during the next working week to mess around with dealers, so I bought it then & there, from a dealer across town.

My aim was to get it below RRP ($26990), so I was happy enough with that.

$25,900? That is a great deal, I wish mine was that cheap but the discounting was not as good a couple of years ago.

I think $26k is a very reasonable price to pay for 09 build, 09 compliance stock (w/o leather and sunroof).

I bought my Polo GTI from Osbourne Park after going to John Hughes and standing around for 20 minutes as the only customers and not being attended too then being given a dodgy deal.

OP isn't too bad I guess, they have messed up a few times with me but they always fix the problem and offer a bit of compensation.

In terms of a good deal, I got mine in April 08 for 29,750 drive away with sunroof and leather, pretty sure for the time that was a good deal.

If you dont have to buy brand new i think i saw a Polo GTI in the sunday times last week for 21,000, might be worth having a look.

When I bought mine from John Hughes I ordered it late 2006 and it arrived some months later in Jan 2007 and at the time they did not budge on price one bit. The demand was high for them and they were litterally being made to order at that time and since there was only 1 other VW dealer at the time again I had no room to negotiate.
Since then I have been clearly unimpressed with them and have never had my car serviced by them due to some shoddy customer service in the past.
If you buy from them take it somewhere else for servicing unless you want an inexperienced apprentice working on your car.

I bought mine from John Hughes Dec -06. - $26,900 drive away. Saying that, there was the usual December promotion being done by VW and the Polo GTI was included in that.

I've recently been looking at upgrading and I went to VW Osborne Park to test drive a Passat. The fella there wasn't too bad and he gave me a good length of test drive - more than your usual around the block.

By the way, if you're interested, as i'm looking to upgrade I may try to sell my car privately. It's in good condition, 23k on the clock, very welll looked after etc. PM me if interested!

Oh yeah, one last word of advice. The Polo GTI only needs servicing once per year. However, both JH and OP will try to tell you to bring it in for a service on the 6 month mark. Up to you, but if you do want to go down that route, go and get an independent to do an oil change rather than pay the Stealers!

I had to get John Hughes himself involved in my sale as the salesman did a bad job

left with a very bad taste in my mouth unfortunately...

buy Ossie Park VW...service it with Quattro Motors

They reckon they are gonna call me back tomorrow. I think I'll tell them I have changed my mind. The sales manager essentially insulted me in talking on the phone about how much I wanted for my existing car - this is not a company I really want to deal with.

Always expect to get screwed on your trade-in... No matter what brand you are trying to buy!!

Best bet is to sell private then go in there cash-in-hand, or say you are going to buy the car outright for the full ammount, then sell your car later. Dealers tend to negotiate more when a trade-in is not involved in my experience. If you persist with the trade-in, just remember that every $ you get for your trade also goes onto the price of the new car

Im going to have to sound like an echo.

I bought mine from John Hughes for $26,399 DA without any options in Feb 08.
The service was horrendous and they were going to make me wait 2wks+ for the car, but I told them I wouldnt buy unless they guaranteed it was in the showroom ready to drive away by the end of the week.

My old man got his Golf GTI from Osbourne Park, and he didnt really have anything bad to say about them.
I wouldnt deal with John Hughes VW again if I had the choice.

Salesman even tried to charge me $20 for fuel... That didnt stick.

I mean, at the end of the day, I got my car and I love it... so I dont really mind, but like most people here say... all dealers r pretty much the same...

JH offered me 700 dollars trade in...i ended up selling the vehicle privately for 5500

if i wasn't set on getting my Pogo...i would have turned around and got minimum trade in of 2 o 3 g's at a Toyota dealership
