  • Coolant issues

    Hi Guys,

I've got an 07' GTI, so its still under warranty...but I am just curious as I seem to be running out of coolant very frequently...i last topped up (by which I mean I was below the minimum line) almost two months ago and just this week I got a coolant warning light and when I inspected (cold of course) it was just about bone dry.

Is this normal? I wouldn't think so?

    P.S.

I am using the VW G12 coolant by the way.

Hmm. I had a bit of coolant loss, topped it up with the G13 plus plus (about 400ml), but strangely enough, it hasn't moved from the MAX line.

But if it's going bone dry as you say, that certainly doesn't sound normal and I would be taking her back to the dealer.

In a word, no. The cooling system is sealed. If you're losing it, it must be going somewhere.

Cracked plastic tank on the radiator? Thermostat housing leaking?

NOT normal, go get it checked by your dealer.

Yeah warranty for sure. Otherwise its an extorting 600 bucks for a new radiator through VW.

I am having the same issue of late... I just topped mine up last night for the second time in ~9 months.

On another related note, my water pump seems to be making a very high pitch, intermittant whine / electrical noise, but whenever I take it too the dealer it doesen't do it... any ideas??

Had a similar issue today. Started my car to go home from work, and about 30 secs after starting I get a coolant warning light. Look under the hood and see the coolant level below minimum. My sisters place was only a couple of ks away so I headed over there to top up with water (didn't have any G12 at home) - once I got there, the coolant had gone back up to above the min line

Will keep an eye on it incase there is a slow leak as I would need to check it once its cold. At least this has given me a warning to buy some G12 coolant.

sounds like poorly manufactured radiators buckling under the heat (this is how it was explained to me at vw)...mine was fixed under warranty so you should take yours in when you get the chance

another update: my horn now makes a funny sound (doesn't sound so girly anymore), so I opened up under the hood to have a look and found my coolant was just on the minimum line (when hot). so either looks like they didn't top up the coolant when they fixed it or its not fixed.

As an update, I also had my radiator replaced under warranty yesterday @ Austral...

If your coolant gets lost and magically reappears go and get it checked out!!!
