  • Looking to buy a Polo

HI guys in the next few weeks i am looking to buy a polo. (waiting for my 2000 mk4 golf rally to sell)

Currently looking the polos around 2007 with a budget of $25k

Is there anything i should be looking for, defects/issues etc. I will be sending the car I like to get checked out, but will just like to know some things i should be looking for first.

    Cheers.

(yes i did use the search function and there was threads similar but i just wanted to make sure that there is nothing specific about the ones i would be looking at

Make sure it has a 1.8T badge LOL just joking.

I've got a 07 model and the issues I've had are AC compressor ceasing and gearbox recall (do a search on this, lots of things will pop up).

For $25k you should be able to pick up one with enough change to do some mods also.

Welcome to the forum, I'm sure you'll find many helpful hints and tips on here.
    Cheers,

    John

      Welcome!

If you are contemplating modding yours, you could pick up a bargain in the Classifieds section on this forum.

If you're looking for a stock, should be able to get one for well less than that (privately).

If possible, get one with some warranty left, that way anything that goes wrong is covered (unless its been heavily modified).

If you are nice to someone, they might be nice enough to give you a ride in a modded one to see what you get for your money, but the Polo can be quite the machine when Chipped and dropped.

There are a few main things to watch out for:
      - noisy gearbox (may not be a issue to VW, but i'd be worried).
      - noises (again, may not be fatal to the vehicle, but getting rid of noises from the vehicle for me is proving to be painful).
      - if you have a trusted mechanic, checking the fluids will give you a reasonable impression of how the vehicle has been treated since its last service).

Ask questions, we can be a friendly bunch (sometimes)

Thanks guys, some good advice. If people have more feel free to chip in.

for the $25k, I'd obviously be looking at a great condition polo. (possibly sunroof and leather) Down the track I'd obviously chip it (still deciding whether to do this during warranty or not)

Welcome to the forum sim. You've picked a real bargain car.

My best bit of advice starts with a question? How hot does it get in your part of QLD in summer? Might be a strange start, but I've got leather and I look forward to winter every year. Had I known how hot leather gets in summer, I mean REALLY hot, I might have thought twice. Either think very hard about it, or get some good covers for summer because if it's unbearably hot in Sydney during summer, I'd hate to live with Leather in QLD. But yeah the seat heaters are sooooo nice on a 0 deg day in winter.

There is a fantastic slightly modded Polo GTI in the classified section, http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=30368
I believe the owner is moving onto a Beetle 1.8T

Can you still get them new for $26,990? If you can I would beg or steal the other 2K and get a new one.

Yeah i have the same thoughts about the leather as well. Still undecided.

Regarding mods, Honestly i would prefer to do them myself (professionally installed) just for piece of mind really. I may be wrong, but if I'm going to spend all this money it would be nice to have no doubts about it.

an extra 2K wouldn't be a problem, didn't know they were that cheap to be honest.

$26990 plus ORC is the official price .. go chat to a dealer and they should be able to do a better price.

I think you'll find a lot of people paid $26,990 or less as total price. I know I did, although no leather and was 2 and half years ago.

Mine was $31k driveaway but thats with leather and ipod. I dont think leather is a problem.... the regular kilt interior makes it look cheap n nasty like a Hyundai getz inside. The bigger problem is heat soak up there in sunny QLD, thats where FMIC is a sensible mod.

I think this is only when VW offer the no on road costs sales. You may be able to screw a good deal but I don't think it will be $26990 drive away.

Sean's car would be an awesome buy and best of all there really isn't anything left to do. Although you could buy Petrina's and that way he would stop post-whoring garbage everywhere
                          Cheers,

sim the tartan cloth isn't my cup of tea. I don't think it looks cheap, but I'm not a fan of tartan. And yeah I get ya on mods, you learn lots about the car when doing it yourself.

A new car with Leather these days might be hard to be had for less then $32K on roads. During a period of run out, some around here got amazing deals of $27K-$28K drive away. If you can stretch to $30K and haggle well, will be a good deal. IMO the sunroof in the Polo GTI is a little small.

I thought it looked out of place in the first GTI i drove (Blue)

When I looked at the red one, it seemed to suit and stand out a lot less.
