Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • has anyone upgraded their stereos?

thinking about upgrading mine, no idea what to get though in terms of what double din to get thats good or is it worth upgrading speakers aswell.

does anyone actually know what system is in the gti allready in terms of model and what speakers are used?

if anyone has upgraded theirs and has some piccies on offer that would be great.

    cheers

Thinking of upgrading too thanks to my volume knob that keeps turning itself up and now my speakers are getting scratchy.

      Hoyhoy.
Ah, the volume knob. Yes I use to think the knob was wierd & changing volume. But try playing with the knob [volume] when the car is sitting still & you'll find tiny notches, if you leave it in between notches at the desired level, you should find the volume will stay steady.

Actually, the stereo has a feature which progressively increases volume with speed. You can set various levels (rates of increase) using the tuning knob

This Timbo, he's on the ball. I did also have problems with vol. knob half way between notches.------- But like Timbo says try the GALA setting [booklet No. 3.4_ page6] in the manual. Tricky stuff, first hold in the tuning knob, you will get GALA with numbers 1 to 9 by turning the knob left or right, which will give you varying volume ratios per speed.

yeah I keep finding that with increased speed comes increased happiness and volume, particularly with the rock and roll genre

Vee in it is a double din blauplankt head unit with phillips 6" front splits. I got mine done by some guys in Brisbane "Northfield at Mcgregor" did a really good job except for the part i mentioned in my other post. I would say if your doing one do the head unit first single din is fine and they used a pocket from a Mazda 3 for the other space. Also if you do consider speakers factor in some Sound deadining as the door trims are metal (bit tinny without the stuff) and forget mounting an amp under your front seats cause there is a metal bump in the middle which meant my amp is mounted in the boot.

When i get a chance pics will be posted.

                    Hope that helps

                      hey jas,,

that did mate, thanx...some piccies would be great, in a noobie when it comes to car audio, so i have no idea what i need or dont need, at the moment i just wanna upgrade the head unit, was looking at an alpine dvd but they are so pricey, ridiculous as im on a student budget,

do u know what speakers are in the car as in dimensions and sizes, and are they worth upgrading?

                      cheers

Vee u only need a dvd if ur running a tv unit. Personally i wouldnt bother but u might want to for you my order would be headunit 1st then front speakers mine are 6 and 1/2 inch boston accousticsfitted perfectly then if u want some more grunt add a nice 4 channel amp and maybe a sub only prob being are you willing to lose boot space over it im not so my sub stayed out and my amp got mounted on the left hand side in the boot but as i said all up to you i would just say sound deaden your doors as part of the speakers.

But be warned for installation of speakers amp hu wiring and dynamat it was 900 bucks without the gear

                          Me.

                          Hey Guys,

I’ve been reading this forum for a while and decided to sign up as this thread suited me

                          Anyways,

I’ve done the headunit & front splits and added a few goodies to the list as well.

                          Alpine Type X splits x2
                          Alpine DVD supportive Headunit
                          Alpine 700watt amp x2
                          Alpine Type R 12inch Sub

I got all this installed and professionally tuned for $400, that was fairly cheap at the time and some companies wanted 800+, I went to Northfield Moorooka in Brisbane (very well known company) who knew exactly what they were doing and did a fantastic job.

                          -
                          Kai
