  • Just installed HID = Very happy!

    hey guys,

ive been abit bored of the dull yellow-ish light output of the standard headlights. i ended up installing a set of HID's that i had sitting around the garage. they are a set of 6000k hid's which are just the white colour, i didnt go any higher because it wouldve looked abit tacky imo,

install was pretty much straight forward no modifications required, and im stoked with the result, the lighting is extremely brighter, i can see alot further, and not as blinding to others as i thought + no error message on dash board.

conclusion: i should have done this the first week i purchased the car, dont think i can ever go back to the standard bulbs, highly recommend other to the upgrade as well.

ill post some pics up as soon as i find the cable for the camera.

i'm not going to weigh in with my opinion of home hid conversions for cars that were never built for them (hint: i dont think much of them) but i will tell you that its an illegal (and defectable) modification.

There might be a problem here... the intense light of the globes can cause generous amounts of heat in the light. This can cause the material to lose its clearness.. Have a look at older cars where the headlights have gone all misty. Its because of the brighter bulbs and even sometimes the standard bulbs.

Actually the brightness of the bulbs does not have much to do with it. It's the wattage of the bulb that creates the extra heat.

Most cars come with 55W bulbs standard and you change them to a higher wattage bulb to get better light output (sometimes up to 100W ).

HID's are different. They use a different gas to create light and are generally a lower wattage than standard. What makes them "brighter" is the light temperature not wattage. Just because they are 6000k does not mean they will cause the lenses to discolour, you'll probably find that they produce less heat than the standard ones.
            Cheers,

            John

HID's use electrical arching (the light produced is the electrical arch rather than the heated filament of traditional bulbs).

The arching would likely use more power, but as I believe its a double bulb design, the heat output could be lessened.

Lense discolouration (polycarbonate) is caused by UV. Thats why you always need to check that the bulbs you use are UV cut varieties.

HID uses LESS watts than incandecent bulbs so they will produce less heat.

You're most likely to get pulled over especially if you've installed it on a vehicle with standard reflector headlights rather than projector type.

Well you're getting HID's convinced me to get new Bulbs (main headlight only).

Found it really hard to find out what was legal and illegal.

Eventually, looks like 4000K is legal (went with the Phillips BlueVision), the 4300K (CrystalVision) are not.

This relates to the Australian Standard ADR51 apparently... If you want to read it for yourself, you can find pages of fun here.

What makes a HID bulb brighter is that they're MUCH more efficient at converting electricity into light. The colour temperature has very little to do with it, and colour temperature and heat output are generally unrelated.
                        Nothing to see here...

FYI, HIDs are not filament lamps, and are not covered by that ADR.

The ADR you want is this one.

You must have headlamp washers and auto-levelling installed for your HID installation to be legal.

What brand HID's did you install????

Looking at doing this to my Pog but not sure which ones to get. Have heard that some cars don't like HID's so don't want to install a kit that kills my electrical system.
                            Cheers,

Just wondering if Im not understanding right...
Alot of ppl confuse replacement lamps that are higher in temp as HID, as opposed to actual HID... (I used to).
Is gettin HID a simple install as stated???
I was certain it involved more than just changing lights....

I have DiamondVision on my GTI, low beams rock, but high beams arent anything to write home about...
but these are NO comparison to my gf's Accord Euros HID... theyre on another level!

                              Am I wrong here?
