Could just get your handling tip top so you can hold whatever speed you have through corners.
Or just go the slow and low, resided yourself to having a slow car that can shave the hairs off an ants back.
    And we have a winner

I only have a fairly stock GTI, RSB's and strut brace yet I just beat, R32's, Golf GTI's and Megane F1's at Oran Park EPCC round.

Forget power, just go all out handling mods and weight reduction. If you are motorsport inclined you could give lots of competitors a dust up on a hill climb circuit.

Unless you throw some real money at it, you wont see great benefits in the Polo 1.4.

Enjoy the car for what it is. I think there would be some slight gains with the usual intake exhaust route but im not sure if it will be enough to justify the spend.

I think wheels and suspension is the better place to spend.. Come buy my GTI wheels I have and you will be half way there.

I drove a 1.4 auto Polo today at work - To be honest it ain't all that bad, not that i was giving it a hiding or anything.

        Neat for a city runner.

To put it into perspective, we do alot of BMW servicing and the 316i compact and 520i.... THOSE are slow. Stick with the Polo, make it look cool, handle well, and it'll teach you how to drive smooth and fast. Grunt ain't everything.
        Cheap, Fast, Reliable. Choose two.

I'd say go with handling, it means you won't need to build up pace so often.

In heavy rain along the black spur a 1.6L Mk4 with KW v3's coilovers, upgraded swaybars and phat rubber was about even with a completely stock Polo GTI. He could take the corners and I just reeled him back in on the straights.

Of course a GTI with coilovers or a half decent spring/shock setup will change this significantly.

yeh didn't have a choice in the matter of the car, my oldies decided to get me a car and make me pay them back..not that i'm complaining too much!

yeh i've already wacked some 18's on it and some eibach race springs.

but i suppose i'll have to just save up for a real car

You will probably find that the 18" wheels have slowed the car down ... all that extra weight for the little engine to deal with !

Like ours, you'd be benefiting from some great fuel economy. As I said, another 10 KW & it'd be a great little car.

man, i drove a 1.4 when i was having my car serviced, and although it doesnt have the zippyness of my chipped tdi, i was pleasantly surprised- its no ferrari, but it was THE perfect car for around town- cruised comfortably in traffic, manouverable, and it was very easy to drive around without risk of doing anything illegal (like speeding-not being sarcastic).

i'd suggest not to pay too much attention to 'performance' mods, and instead, spend money on good rubber, sway bars, and suspension. with a lower-powered car, corners are your friend- you just need to acknowledge that and mod your car to suit.

                  good luck!
