VW or German made filters only mate. Your choice of oil as long as it meets VWs specifications.

I was thinking mobil 1 0w-40 and not sure about filter maybe i can get a vw one .I only do about 3000km a year so would it be ok to do say 6000km in 2 years and do oil change and filter change on a 2 year 6000km interval.I only think ill keep it for another 3 years at this stage i have done 7500kmmk 7 golf 90 tsi comfortine dsg lime stone grey

Are you going to be tight on a possibly $20 filter?? You then say the same thing, is it worth changing the oil after only 1500Ks??
Going OT
Personally I'd be doing enough Ks to warrant the running costs. I know you have your reasons but it just seems nuts to me to use a car so little.
My S3 has been parked up for 10 days and it's killing me not to use it. I do 500ks a week in my Ibiza, the concept of leaving them sat is bizarre.
Back OT.
Imparts do filters by Hengst. Good quality German and cheaper than the dealers.

I think i go visit the nearest vw parts place and buy 2 oil filters and sump plug gaskets and wait for a local auto parts sale and buy 2 bottles of mobile 1 0w-40
and i should have enough to service my car for 4 years.I will save the money i would have given the dealer and will have more to go towards my nxt car.I dont think the engine will blow up if i did say 8000km in 2 years with out a oil and filter change.I will have total about 20000km in 4 years time so i dont think the lack of a few service stamps in the log book will save me anything in resale
my low km and car condition will sell it i hope if i got $9000 in 4 years i would not be worried.mk 7 golf 90 tsi comfortine dsg lime stone grey

Here's my advice, for what it's worth. Like you, I do under 3k a year - and so have learned to ignore the comments of the forum hotshots about rusting in place etc. I consulted the tech advice depts of castrol and mobil on this and what I learned/do is:
Change the oil at least once a year however low the mileage. If doing under 5k any more frequently is a waste.
Use a full synthetic that meets vw spec 504.00 (petrol) or 507.00 (diesel). I use castrol edge 5w-30 but mobil 1 is also ok.
Don't buy too much oil at once - these have a recommended shelf life of only about two years.
Use a genuine vw oil filter (part no 06A 115 561 B) - 18 bucks from the dealer.
You don't really have to replace the sump plug gasket - it's permanently attached to the plug and can be reused a few times. However, my local parts guy gives me a free plug every time I buy a filter. Ask and you may receive.
Good luck.

if you do lots of short trips, i'd defiantly be inclinded to change oil and filter every 5000kms.
For the sake of about $50 bucks, do it once a year., if you put away $1 per week you'll have enough to do oil and filter, once a year, regardless of kms.

Filters - seriously, they are $18 from the dealer, which I think for dealer pricing is reasonable. You might save $5 going elsewhere, but is it worth it? Whatever you use, it must be german!
And if you want the best way to ruin your engine, service every 2 years. Even if you do 50km a year, you don't want to leave it any longer than a year, as despite the low kms, every time you do a cold start you wear out the oil. There is a thread right now in the general section which is pretty handy if you want to get an idea how important oil changes in your car is.NickZ

Although this topic has been done a few times about what oil to use in the Polo, I'll add this.
Last time I was in Supercheap, Castrol Edge 0W40 was $56 for 5 liters. As others have said, a genuine oil filter from VW Parts is $18, and you won't need a new sump plug w/gasket washer.
Threads about what oil to use and change intevals...
This was in the DIY and Facts area for Polo.
Hi all, I am planning to change engine oil for my Polo GTI when it reaches 7500KM. Does anyone have an idea as to what brand and type of oil is suitable for this car? e.g 10W-40 Cheers
