  • GTi ground up project

    Hi All,

Have been lurking for the past week while doing research on my next car, have decided to move ahead with getting a 2006+ Polo GTi.

At this stage I'll be looking to have it chipped and change to 17" Kuro Intake with goodyear eagle F1 rubber.

Being that I've never been the biggest car nut, I'm looking to get my hands dirty with this project and educate myself as much as possible.

I was hoping I might be able to get everyone's two cents on other mods I should get done, recommendations on where to get chipping and rim changovers done in Brisbane as well as any other recommendations you can offer such as which year model to go for 06-09.

Looking to make the purchase on my return from Japan in the first week of July.

Look forward to hearing from you all, and becoming an active member of the forum.

    cheers,
    Cal

Newdaze, Welcome mate and welcome to being broke lol

In terms of chips etc you honestly are best using the search function and do some reading on various topics.

As for rims nearly any wheel place is fine for the rims but i would go with the recommended wheel aligner by jmac in the recommended repairers section for alignment etc.

On another note so what colour u get? and where in bris u from?

      Welcome to the forum.

Good on you for wanting to learn and get your hands dirty. You can save a lot of money that way.

This is probably not the easiest of cars to work on. In fact I would say its one of the more difficult ones I have work on. There is not much room under the bonnet, or anywhere else for that matter. So if you can work around this car you should have no problems working on others.

        Welcome

The Polo GTI is a great car, within its limits.

What you do would depend on your budget. Heres a brief overview from a newbie (only had mine 6 weeks):

        Power / Performance:
        - Chip
        - Air intake (Pod filter, intake pipe and panel filter)
        - Exhaust (Dump pipe or full)
        - Lots of other engine internals (Diverter, TIP, other pipes)
        - FMIC

        Handling / Suspension
        - Springs / Coilovers / Shocks
        - Wheels / Tread (looks like you're already into this)
        - Various mounts

If you've got plenty of $$$, Turbo conversion, LSD, Brakes Kit.

If I were you, I'd get the car and learn how it is to live with, then do plenty of reading and asking questions on here.

On the other hand, if you are like me, you've got dates queued up for the workshop as soon as you've got the keys in your hand

in my opinion, the chip is a must. Everything after that comes down to preference.

          cheers jasn78,

Have read through the FAQ, and scanned through almost every page of the Polo forum. Some of the info is a tad old by this stage Im just making sure im getting the most up-to-date info tbh.

will have a squiz at jmac's recommendation

Will most likely be going black i think, this is the kind of look im going for:

Your mods should be dictated by the purpose of spending the money. Form Vs function. I like to follow the KISS rule, mod for function, form comes second (unless it's ugly). These cars certainly aren't the easist to start on or even learn about modding from, so do loads of research on here before parting money, most questions have been raised in some form.

the pic on the right is what I'm going for.

that one from memory is running KW coilovers, on 16"x 9 wheels, front bumpers been shaved, notch from the old grill has been filled in and has the badgless grill.

body work will cost you big $$$ and I gave up trying to find a nice set of 16x9 in aus only option I found where to get custom made wheels or import again big $$$

Big ups for going black... just hope you like car detailing cos its a bitch to keep clean.

You're just a few minutes down the road from Guy (APR). PM Guy_H on here if you want to talk to him. He'll also be able to help you with all the other things you want to do with your car.

Other tuners in Brisbane are not really handy AFAIK.
