have had my jetta chipped for about a year now, no probs with it at all. Has improved the driveability of the car and also (when not driving enthusiastically) improved fuel efficiency.

I just got my Seat intake and BMC filter installed.
Definitely worth the $$$ to go in combination with the chip (well, at least with APR v2).
There is a spare one going is the Classifieds, might be the last one around this forum other than people stripping vehicles for sale for a while...

So do all the chippers still think it's NOT crucial to upgrade anything else on the car to help the Polo handle the chip better?
I can see me modding in the below order in the distant future, but i'm hoping I don't need to fork out much more $$ on extra parts, unless they're neccesities.
Mod 1: Lowering
Mod 2: Chip
Also hoping Warranties aren't voided as that'll put an end to my plans for the chip anyway, though a less powerful, fuel economy-aimed chip from Evolve Technik may be better for someone like myself......?MY16 MK7 Golf GTI

well i got the chip on thursday and i just bought the seat intake. and am purchasing BMC air filter as soon as my intake arrives.
yes its a disease.
my mods are mainly going to be things like intake and perhaps exhaust. nothing to put more stress on the car after chipping. ( the way i see it intake mods etc just make the turbo/engines job easier and more efficient)

also, there are arguments that some companies' tunes will show up in VCDS when you take your car in to the dealer, and others wont. there is also the argument that the VW warranty will still be honored so long as the flash increment counter is either 0 or 1 (0=stock, 1=update, perhaps?)
i have read many, many threads and posts on other forums regarding mk5 gti's and the effect of different tuning companies on the flash increment counter.
some argued only the established brands such as oettinger and apr were indetectable to the flash increment counter, and thus VW of Australia, but that all other tuning companies (e.g. custom code, bluefin, giac, revo, chipped uk etc etc) would show up.
others told them to stop being naive because if VW really really wanted to, they WILL be able to find out whether or not your car has been reflashed, REGARDLESS of whether it was a big-hitter like apr, or a newcomer to our shores like chipped uk.
at the time i read these threads, chipped uk was working on a way to program something into their ST3 handset (like ive got) whereby the flash increment counter will never increase-people in the uk were able to confirm with VAG-COM that chippeduk had been successful in doing this with Bosch EDC 16'S, i think. they were working on the Siemens MED9 AFAIK(that's another reason why i went with them btw- the ability to NOT increase the flash increment counter, despite using a remote unit, by yourself, without linking up with the chiptuning company's computers at the time of remap, is pretty skillfull i'd say-i figured if they can do that, they they MUST know how to remap cars).
the general reply on those forums was a mixture of:
"but if ive been flashed, and something breaks down but is NOT related to the flash, it would help to get warranty work done if the flash increment counter was either 0 or 1"
and "why are you trying to lie to VW regarding what you've done to the car? shouldnt you, as one who modifies their car beyond stock (well beyond stock, in some cases), be responsible enough to subscribe to the "you gotta pay to play" and "when altering something from stock in any case, to any degree, you are YOUR OWN warranty". (i like this one. i hate asshats who whine "but its not fair, and its not my fault").
but at the end of the day, chip/ tune = dont be foolish in thinking that VW is less capable of finding your tune than your tuning company. they WILL find it sooner or later, and your warranty WILL be voided if they deem appropriate.
changing subject: in terms of what ''supporting mods'' are ESSENTIAL for just a chip, i would say none are REAAAAAALLLY necessary, but i would highly recommend a couple:
-SEAT intake: really, really helped smooth out the power curve-it was noticeable even on my stock tdi, not at all from a power point of view, but from a smoothness point of view. it also felt like i had a few more hundred revs of power that i could use down low and up top, when compared with stock. to a tdi'er, thats important-to be able to ease forward from 1200rpm instead of 1500rpm, in the 10km's of each journey where i rev to no higher than 2500rpm in order to warm up my car properly, i'll take those few hundred revs thanks.
-Wheel arch mod: do it because despite peoples' misgivings re power etc, it IS a tried and tested mod all over the world. dont expect any gains even on the butt-dyno, but its very cheap to do and evacuating that hot air from behind the intercooler, and thus allowing a minor drop in temperature to even the smallest degree-well, no one at all will convince me that this is a bad thing.
-additionally, i'd say that for you petrol boys, it seems to be that forge TIP is much less prone to collapse than the standard tip, and that bmc/k&n air filter (higher flow, not necessarily better filtering as they only have about 1/3 the filter element of stock paper filter, but thats your choice) are good additions to just round everything off nicely. i'd confirm that with the petrol boys though.
enjoi!
p.s. i've seen you on here alot ralfi so sorry if i posted any superfluous information that you were already aware of- just bored at work and figured i'd write a short story lol (because we cant look up porn)Last edited by Buller_Scott; 23-05-2009, 03:06 AM.

well said!! Thanks for taking the time. Buller
I went mod mad regardless of wty.
I have faith in VW
I have faith in the research done on the mods and the mods themselves.
For me the greatest issue would be driver error either mine or someone elses on the road..so good insurance policy is probbaly the best mod you can make.

While I was at a dealer( not named), I authorised plenty of warranty on chipped and modified vehicles so long as it was not ECU or modified part related there's no problem. The secret is to have a good relationship with your selling dealer when vehicle is still under warranty. Not once was the flash counter even looked at, if a diagnosis protocol was needed to be supplied to VW only the software coding was looked at, I told all chipped vehicles just to revert back to stock tune anyway when in for service.Joe Chu

Chipped- bang on, mate.
Before i even bought the car, i bought insurance at JUSTCAR (i know AAMI underwritten but their image gives a sense of security to 'tuners', so their marketing and advertising dept is doing their job right) because at that stage i already knew that i wanted to modify it beyond stock.
I have a good relationship with my dealer and they are great guys- ive discussed getting 2.5inch mandrel bent downpipe custom made, and taking it to them to have it flow tested- they were very interested to see results, and head of service dept said re warranty: "well, mate, they SAY that any modification will void it but thats just a small part of the exhaust- naaah it wouldnt be a problem. when you get it done, bring it in and we can have a look at the difference on the diagnostic software, it'd be interesting".
i too have faith in these guys and VW as a whole, AND i reckon any driver's best warranty is having an insurance policy that knows about and covers EVERY SINGLE MOD in the car.
hey joe- "The secret is to have a good relationship with your selling dealer when vehicle is still under warranty."- just goes to show that withholding info from dealers/ human beings and trying to be sneaky just effs oneself over when its time for the crunch.Last edited by Buller_Scott; 23-05-2009, 11:27 PM.
