  • Whirring noise when turning wheel

As the title suggests. Not sure when it started. Audible when audio is off. It used to be when I turn the wheel right, I'd hear the whirring noise. I thought it might just be my tires. But yesterday the opposite happened - nothing when turning right, but whirring noise when turning left. Any ideas? (By the way, I don't know how the car feels, I'm not driving anymore...)

    Cheers

Could just be the motor for the power steering...

I get it when moving the wheel at all.

Its very soft, I assumed it was just the power steering motor as the Pog is a noisy little beast and likes to tell you every little thing that its doing

        Hoyhoy.

Just may be it is one of the rubber boots on your front shocky's caught in the top strut bearing, me have had this, not a nice noise.
        Hooroo.

Is it like a soft 'tick, tick, tick, tick' as you turn the wheel?

I had this off and one for ages - seemed to come and go - some days worse than others. Other days not there.

Took it to the dealer who fixed it under warranty - something to do with the strut top beariing which they replaced.

I've had this ever since I picked my car up. It sounds like a healthy power steering motor doing it's job. You could take it back to the dealer, but since I've heard it in ever Pog I've been in, I doubt there's much they can do for you as that's just the way it operates.

It is the sound of the power steering motor. You only hear is when dry steering or steering at very low speeds in tight areas as these situations put the most strain on the powersteering motor. In general dry steering is not good but you just can avoid it sometimes.

I have a similar noise when ever the car turns left, bit of a 'tick, tick, tick, tick'. Mine isn't the power steering as that's a different sound (I can hear the power steering pump when reversing into the garage).

A few weekends ago I pulled the front drivers side wheel off to have a look at it as I thought the tire wall may have been damaged, turns out it wasn't. When I put the wheel back on the sound had disappeared. It's now come back again the last couple of days.

Might have a look into this strut top bearing on the weekend otherwise I'll get the dealer to have a look at it when I take the Polo in for the 45K service.

could the ticking just be from the stress being put on the tyre bolts when its turning? I think i heard that sound before a few times and it usually happens in the morning. Maybe lubricate the bolts and tighten them and see if it goes.

Nah man, if you have this, you have bigger dramas, like the other car you are just about to hit when the wheel comes off.
If you have loose wheel nuts, sometimes you will se a gray looking powder residue coming out of the stud homes for the wheels. This is where the wheel has been moving freely, and rubbing off some of the metal from your wheel.

im not saying they are loose. What i mean is the sound of the ticking could be the sound of the steel flexing. Especially since it happens when its cold and the car hasn't been driven yet. It sounds like the same sound u get when trying to loosen tight wheel bolts.

                          Check power steering fluid level.

It's the strut top bearing. As mentioned I had this exact same noise (it came and went). Dealer will fix.

And so again with the tick tick tick when turning the steering wheel - so another strut top to be replaced. Tell you what - Polo's have some serious recurring problems, I love it but really................
